Lord of the Rings is often described as High Fantasy. Maybe in terms of themes, but magic is very rare and dangerous. Do you think when Tolkien uses "virtue" we read "magic?" Also, watch The Untouchables for a perfect representation of the Campbellian Monomyth. Mentor, companions, big bad enemy, failure, mentor taken away, hero receives knowledge to defeat the enemy while in the underworld... Perfect.

I think the reason why the Epic format is something that has existed throughout history and also throughout different cultures is that it's basically the structure of our lives. We start small, but over the course of our childhood we develop dreams and ideas. If we are lucky, we manage to get good teachers (mentors) who are older than us and help us on our way. After fulfilling our dream (or at least pursuing it for a long time, even if we don't end up where we initially wanted to) we are changed people, with a larger horizon and a different perspective on ourselves and the world around us. It's very easy for us to connect with this kind of story on a personnal level because we overlay our own journey in life on top of it, and I think that's why this narrative structure is so popular. It's also hopeful, because it makes us feel that if those people were able to reach their goals even though they started from humble beginnings, maybe we are too if we just continue fighting for our dreams.

I canNOT believe the story about the characters that hatched a plot to not only personally profit from "cancer pigeons", then doubled down on their perfidy to personally profit from the cure. Or rather, i CAN believe it. On the one hand, that's when alignment suddenly should matter, or perhaps the gods of the different characters should get involved and give them a corrective smack. On the other hand, props to the players for ingenuity: perhaps they should get an Evil Genius award. 😆

@@christopherkearney6477 I tend to play more towards High Fantasy but if you use Cohorts or have NPCs maybe you can use them as backups for your characters if they bite the dust. And use this awesome game for your player's first character.

Epic Campaign 20 years ago was part of a setting " War of the Baronies," for AD&D2e then 3e. The players could run characters as hags and fiends. One beloved npc/ pc merchant that saved the characters from time to time got killed off so a paladin went on a quest to gain wishes from a fire gennie to bring the old man back from the day. Cause the old merchant did good great acts in life. Turns out the old merchant was a lawful evil pit fiend in charge of corruption in the campaign setting. Chaotic evil you fall into the Abyss , lawful evil you must chose your fate. But neutral evil souls are easier to shape into Baators. The paladin brought back a pit fiend, and the paladin said it was due to a debt of honor. "but, but, but," it was a Fiend ! Fiend " I did not cause this war, human pride did. You nobles didn't feed the homeless cause by your wars, I did. I just spoke to you the choices you could make, you chose your path, I did not force you to do what you chose to do. I even offer you chances to redeem yourself, but you chose the easier path. You dam yourselves. The irony is, I took a war orphan created by your wars. I trained him and watched him grow into a man, just to see him become a paladin of justice which you denied to this land."

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Thank you very much. I have had people tell me I could written a novel or a series of short stories, but other than a few paragraphs my creative skills hit a rock wall. My last gaming shop I went to 12 years ago made it a habit to Roast Princess Leia. We called her The Little Wookie of Organa. Some of my stories told in public got me attacked by other women. So I had practice in dialog. When I was 20 years younger, I had to argue politics and religion way to often. So when my public speaking skills was not up to par, the debates if anyone wants to call them that, end up in fist fight. " I was a bit,.. snoobish." I am in brief Sicilian/ German, on my German side I am a descended of lesser nobility military officer family. My great grand father fought in WW I and when he came over to the USA, he spent years looking over his shoulder cause of a blood feud started from the 1860's. When I was in grade school I wounder why my mom sounded like a Nazi era politician. My mom was a trained paralegal, so more or less I was train to speak in Court. Nations in Europe during the 1800's, states/ counties were more like baronies and Sicily were feuding city states. How does one speak like a catholic priest, a would be warlord, or a Baator Pit Fiend ? Now days speaking in public court, more or less can end you up in jail. Before the end of WW II , speaking in Public Court in Italy, Spain, Germany, or Russia can end up having you and your whole family killed in a quick mob attack. The only way your family can save themselves is that they try to publicly kill you as quick as they can. Hoping the city council believes you were the only one,of the family that felt that way when you spoke. Sorry for another essay, but after 25 years I still can not write in brief.

The Campbellian monomyth pattern works poorly with the typical ensemble-style RPG group. A Bildungsroman typically focuses on the growth of a single character with the rest of the cast acting to support that protagonist. Unless you're expecting your players to dice off for the lead or something, you have to modify things very significantly for ensemble roleplaying. Now if you're running one-on-one, things can change significantly. In a group RPG, you have to manage the desires and growth paths of multiple players _and_ characters, which can work in an epic setting/challenge set, but it's unlikely to look much like The Hero's Journey.
@christopherkearney6477
4 жыл бұрын
This is a problem I have seen as well. Any ideas on how to solve it? What do you do with your groups in this case? For me it becomes the groups identity and growth rather than an individual. I’m fact, most of the characters individual arcs are ignored and it is the story arcs of the group they latch on to. This isn’t for lack of trying as a DM. Just as you said it is very difficult to take a group of 5-8 player characters and focus on the journey for each of them.

@@christopherkearney6477 I think it's a mistake to assume that high-magic, epic scope, world-altering-stakes, high rate or extent of character change over the course of the campaign, and gritty are in any way necessarily linked or opposed. (I consider them to be almost entirely orthogonal, which is to say that you can tweak any one without necessarily making much change to the others.) You can build an interesting world with the settings wherever you like and tell the kinds of stories that you want to tell. For ensemble RPGs, though, I think that rather than looking to Campbell for a template you would do better to look to ensemble fiction like the Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven, where the action has its course set (barring interference) early on and the interest is in how the PCs interact with/interfere with that course. (For a high-magic, epic scope, world-altering consequences example of the same thing, see The Order of the Stick.) Rather than trying to craft a journey, craft a situation and let the players' understanding and actions determine their own journeys. Which is rather to say, "If you want to tell a story, write a novel." The job of a GM is to facilitate the writing of stories by others.

I always considered high fantasy to be more about the mechanics. Eberron, in my mind, was high fantasy. Lots of magic and super hero style characters. I tend to consider myself to run a high fantasy campaign as I am running a 4E clone and 4E feels very high fantasy with all the magic and moves that the PCs and monsters are doing due to the Power system. Lots of magic items which add their own powers. That sort of thing. What you are describing I generally describe as either sandbox gaming (open world, player driven stories) or an Adventure Path (closed world, DM driven stories - when this is the case the DMs story will nearly always be epic in nature).

1:22 "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" and "The Power of Myth" are awesome and totally agree with you on its use for DMs, but Campbell's model is actually based upon Vladimir Propp's generic fairy tale model with a splash of Jungian archetypes. :D 3:21 & 15:18 No wonder 5e fails so often! Too many 5e players want to play stupid special snowflake farcical characters -- instead of fantasy literature heroic types -- in what is essentially an attempt at high fantasy with a pre-programmed story arc, complete with a few ready-made possible endings, pending which railroad car they hitch a ride on. 11:52 In "The Prydain Chronicles," Taran starts off as an Assistant Pig Keeper. Perfect. 14:27 Another way to handle this magic item thing -- the character receives a magic item form someone early, but does not understand its complete power yet. The character will discover it as she/he goes -- for example, a situation will present itself and it will act differently than the character once knew, and new powers are revealed.

Related to the Professor's mention of unlocking magic item powers as you level up, I recommend examining the way Earthdawn handles its legendary items. In brief, certain magic items innately have power levels. To gain command of those inherent abilities, the player must discover key knowledge relating to the item (its name(s), history, identities of previous owners, lore relating to the methods and material involved in its crafting, etc.) or perform deeds like slaying a particular monster or returning to the place where the item was first created. The greater the power level of the ability, the more difficult the task or the more obscure the lore knowledge required to unlock it.

I tend to run pragmatic/cynical high fantasy worlds. The power the world has has the ability to massively change the world for good, but there is far more destructive powers and factions. A single wish can feed an entire village for years, but meteor swarm is so much easier to cast and cause devastation to your enemies. Wanderers (adventures) in my world are well known of and typically have bizarre personalities and power compared to the normal civilian. This actually came off from an overlooked rule in 3e, which is your NPC companions earn a tenth of the XP that you do. So canonically, there is something very distinct that is your character has that others don't. To normal people, this is terrifying. Imagine being a wizard of a great guild, you have slain dozens of bulettes threatening your city, then some guy kills a few and masters a new sphere of magic that you haven't.

Yes! Call to Adventure is a fantastic game/activity/tool for anyone looking for a backstory or a DM/author looking for inspiration/suffering from writer's block. The most rewarding part of the 'game' isn't really winning, it's sitting at the table, looking down at your character's saga and telling a short story of their life, where they came from, what they achieved and experienced, how they were affected, and what became of them. Also, it's playable solo so you can play it in your own time when your group can't get together if you like 😊👍

This video is basically a summary of how I run my D&D campaigns lol Thanks for the video and the reinforcement professor! It is also quite refreshing to hear the "Starting at first level" reasoning. My players groaned at first be they are beginning to understand MWUUAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. Most Dms don't seem to do that much anymore oddly enough.

I'd like to second the part about capturing your players. I ran Lost Mines of Phandelver for some new players (spoilers below) When they got to Wave Echo Cave, the Black Spider had a section that he'd made a lair and stocked it with some minions. The BS had been trying to get to the forge of magic weapons, but couldn't get past the Flame Skull and Skeleton room. The players explored, cleared several rooms and found the BS lair. I decided to have the BS interested in capturing the players rather than kill them, so he could force them to defeat the Flame Skull and clear the way to the magic power he desired. My players decided to fight to the last and each went down one by one. We had played 20+ sessions by that point and they all agreed that they loved the adventure, but hated that session (because they lost the battle). They all woke up chained to some pillars and made a deal with the BS and went on to clear the dungeon and later back in town defeat the BS (and his drow allies I created). So, it all worked out in the end (sort of...) In the process of finishing the adventure, they Fireballed a Noble bad guy killing him and so they had to either become outlaws or turn themselves in to face the Lord's Justice. We began our next adventure with our heroes in (Newgate) prison where they were given a mission to complete in order to earn a pardon. The Noble they killed was resurrected with his family's wealth, and would later make plans to get revenge on the players. The players were also not fond of having to go to prison either, but I had explained to them the laws of the land. You can (and should) kill any monsters you meet. You shouldn't kill any people you meet (or you will pay weregild). And, as a commoner, you better make damn sure you don't kill any Nobles. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the story! A noble family resurrecting a dead villain. Hmmmmm........

I don't allow evil people to be resurrected in my games, even players. If they try it, the body gets infested by demonic spirits or other abominations instead. It's another incentive to be good, and it explains all the evil things players have to fight all the time. In your scenario, I would have had the noble come back as something like a weak vampire or a wight.

I like to run Low Magic campaigns where magic isn’t necessarily weak or outlawed, just hard to come across on the regular and closely guarded especially by Wizards. As such, straight up run of the mill +1 or +2 items are very uncommon as the consideration is that Magic Users and Artificers will not waste their valuable time and resources making “mundane” magic creations. I’ve used items that level with the player for years and it works very well with engaged players and the item is almost a character in its own right.

From what I've understood high fantasy to be, I didn't think I was going to be that into this episode, but I figured I'd watch anyway. Seemed like a lot of things you've covered before, just more railroadish in a sense. Anyway, actually really enjoyed this more than I thought. Had a few inspirational ideas come to mind as I listened. Great video as always PDM. Cheers!! p.s....oh...and I would have picked the chick that leaned toward the bad as well. Story of my life....

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I'm at work and can't look at it right now, but I recall that the items were storied relics whose powers would scale with the characters. Also, the characters had to sacrifice skill points and maybe feats to access the powers, so they'd be rather invested in keeping the items.

I like the idea of having the players craft their magic items. For example they go into a dungeon to kill some Gnolls that are eating the cattle of the small town and there they find this strange looking rock and upon inspecting it they find out it's great quality material and they can go and find a blacksmith that is either capable or crazy enough to work on it and that's how they get a upgrade from a +1 to a +2 sword. And I like the idea of letting mages try to create some magic items with their cantrips or spells. It's silly that we have to have a whole class for that (Artificer) the wizard can do that he studied magic for fuck sake, not like a sorcerer or a warlock that get their powers handed to them.

interested in feedback for a low-fantasy setting.... Alot of the Cult leaders from princes of the apocalypse(howling hatred etc) would be great to use except they in some cases have spell slots for elemental magic. torn between "them using magic is not low fantasy" versus "they dont need to use all of the spells , just enough to fool cult members into believing they have real power" ... not sure how functional the build is for low fantasy campaign. citing science for some of the fire or wind effects is plausible enough but feel i am missing a component that may be compromising.

With my new group of characters I'm being very stingy with handing out magic weapons and items. It has been a problem for me in the past with there being to much magic around. No +5 holy avengers any time. My player Characters are levels 3-4 and there's only 1 magic sword and 2 magic daggers and no magic armor.

I’m DMing an epic high fantasy D&D game now. It’s tough with 10 players. We keep the PCs if the player can’t make we play their character. It’s been fun and we’ve been playing for 2 1/2 years now. I’ve had bad guys fall off a bridge only to return later.

Hmm 🤔 I really need to contemplate what I prefer as DM and player. I think I'm into high-ish fantasy and I prefer heroic characters but I enjoy the game mostly on a non - epic scale. Maybe what I've though of as relatively high fantasy is actually kind of sort of low fantasy.

Epic does not have to be good, but that makes it a lot easier. Without virtuous motives, some strong replacements are needed, and a whole group can't be addicted to Stormbringer.
