Veteran trainers shared their knowledge Tuesday with Emergency Department staffers at The University of Kansas Hospital on the safest way to undress an injured football player in full uniform.
With all the medical expertise on the field every NFL game at Arrowhead, professional football players will most likely have jerseys, pads and helmets removed before heading in an ambulance to the hospital.
However, injured high school, middle school and youth club football players may be transported with full uniforms on. Trainers today emphasized there is a right and wrong way to remove a football uniform off an injured player.
Ideally Dr. Dennis Allin, chair of The University of Kansas Emergency Department and the trainers say it is best to get the uniform off an injured player in two minutes or less.
The critical issues are to make sure the helmet and pads and not constricting breathing while making sure there is no twisting or other damaging movement of the spine.
Removing the face mask is key but there are so many different ways face masks are attached, medical personnel have to be ready to unscrew, cut or saw the mask off without moving the player's head.
Once the face mask is removed, the chin straps can be cut. While one trainer holds the player's head in place, the helmet is removed straight back with no twisting and turning.
The shoulder pads are the cut through and also removed straight back while holding the head still.
The session was to give expertise to hospital staff beyond the sports medicine department.
