It's expensive to have a baby in USA but there are way around it. Buy used, get stuff for free, your baby doesn't have influence on your decisions in buying. When the baby grow up teach it the value of money from early on.

I started a college savings 529 plan in my name where I started with 50 bucks a month and have increased as time goes but I don’t have a baby at the moment and when I do I’ll change it to a custodial account and put their name and social on it so it’ll be their 529 plan with money for college already and will continue to grow the account until they’re 18

I live in the Netherlands and here it's super common to give away things for free, it saves people hassle of getting rid of the stuff. This way I got part of the furniture in my house, a closet and dresser for baby room and I'm planning to get more baby related items this way. When I don't need something anymore I will also give it away, so that the things will circulate instead of buying new items :)

@@Clleonie hello, my husband and I both work. Some years were harder than others but that’s because of poor financial decisions. But if you make a budget and stick with it, kids can be affordable. My husband is in the Air Force Guard, we both manage an at home business using the Amazon platform as well as my husband has a regular 8 hour govt job. I use to work with adults with disabilities and the company paid very well. Getting bonuses and pay increases annually. If you can create multiple streams of income it will serve you well. Now this is my situation. Everyone is different. If you feel only having one child would suit you and your partner then stay there. If no kids that’s okay too. But in my experience the more skills you acquire the more risks you are willing to take (investments) you can make more money the older you get. If you are still single I’d advise you to invest and save! I wish I was taught that. I’m headed into my 40’s this year and I’m sure if I started as a teen or in my 20’s I’d be close to a millionaire. I pray that God prospers you and give you the desires of your heart. Be well.

The best minimalism teacher is being the second-time mom, I guess :) In the middle of stocking up for twins now. And trying not to grumble about babies being such a business now. I mean, $10-15 for 3 bibs? Or a small set of burp clothes for the same price? Planning to use small face towels or bigger ones. If you have a sewing machine, you can cut a few cheap cotton towels, stich them and there you go. DIY burp clothes. Or we got 2 bassinets, but I'm not happy with the quality of the mattress cover, so will just cut to the size one of the cotton sheets I don't use often and give to my mother-in-law to stich them. Four sheets for $0. Swaddles. With my first baby we didn't have those selling in stores, so everyone were just buying cotton/flannel in fabric stores and make DIY ones. I don't plan to buy fancy gadgets like a diaper pail, a wipe warmer, a white noise machine, rockers/bouncers. You can perfectly use a pot with water to sterilize bottles. I remember I used to put them on top of my water kettle and keep the steam for 1-2 minutes. I think anyone can be super inventive and save their money and space from extra clutter!

I just found out I’m pregnant about a month ago and went in for the first checkup/ultrasound scan yesterday. I am currently 8 weeks and 6 days. The tips for saving money are a great idea! I was also wondering, however, what to do as far as medical expenses. I think you said you’re in Canada, and I’m in the states so it’s probably a bit different. I’m on a high deductible plan currently (and by high I mean HIGH-$6300), but am going to switch to the low deductible option during open enrollment. My partner and I are starting to save like there’s no tomorrow since we didn’t have much of a savings to start. By the time baby comes we should have enough to cover medical expenses with a little leftover, but childcare is another issue. Are there any other moms-to-be struggling with just the idea of this?

For my first i got the bulk of my baby items in bundles online from parents getting rid of everything and picked up tons of things in garage sales. My second i went to once upon a child about once a month in my pregnancy and just browsed what they had, then after buying a minimal ammt of stuff to get started i was given everything my niece used as a baby, things my mom picked up for me, then a friend gave me tons of baby furniture. I never asked for gifts either so i felt pretty blessed but was given far more than i needed. Im now pregnant with my 3rd and the 2nd and 3rd will only be about 14 months apart so i know i will need to get doubles of things like cribs, car seats, high chairs that both will use at the same time but then on the other end of the spectrum i was given far too many baby clothes and want to minimize that a ton. I pick around most of it for my favorites anyways and think having too many clothes is overwhelming. I think babies can be way more affordable than people perceive though and some things are just excessive and we dont all need the same things.

Having had 4 kids I can tell you that to not abort and keep it, I nearly died from malnutrition. We got evicted because thr time delivering caused me to lose wages. We had to go to a shelter. No prolifer was there with money to pay my bills. Becsuse I couldn't afford child care, I was stuck, being on welfare. I tried my best, but eventually gave 4 kids up,--one of them for adoption because we wound up out on the street-- no place to go, no food-- nothing. 30 degrees outside. Long story short, today after 20 years later, I have located where my children are. One was badly sexually abused, ; at thr time I gave thrm away, thry were 7, 5, I year old, one was barely out of the newborn stage. I have talked to my now adult children. Thry now understand why I had to give them away. Thry understand totally and reassured me I did the right thing. We have a SUPER RELATIONSHIP NOW. I didn't see my daughter since she was 1 year old and yet years later , I happened to contact a woman who became my business partner. She seemed so familiar, our tastes were so much alike. A month after we formed a business, we discovered she was my daughter! The advice I have for pregnant women is, it is cruel to thr children to have thrm when you can't afford them. DON'T PUT A CHILD THRU THIS. I CAN AFFORD TO BUY ANYTHING NEW NOW. WILL NEVER AGAIN EVEN CONSIDER HANDOUTS, CHARITY, FOOD BANKS,MOTEL VOUCHERS, SECTION 8 HOUSING. I DID IT FOR YEARS, I WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN. WHOEVER SAYS LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. TODAY I Have my children back but we celebrated our reunion with a vacation in Europe. I hadn't seen them in years.

The prices you said you were paying for second hand baby clothes is more than I have paid for brand new multi packs! £100 is way too much money for a second hand bassinet! Mine was free secondhand but I have also seen a lot of cheap one as well. If you don't have much room get a baby bath that flattens and hang it on the wall.
