God bless you. You're an amazing person. The seed salesmen that teaches everyone to save seeds. You would think this would be the absolute worst way to run a business; but, charmed by your honesty and kindness like Chris Kringle at Macy's (Miracleon 34th street), I just cannot stop buying seeds from you. ❤

Luke, Thanks for sharing this. I've been saving thousands of sunflower seeds for years. I grow huge patches for the critters, and always harvest the biggest ones for seed saving.

Timely. Just cleaning out my sunflowers. I don’t need many and don’t mind sharing with wildlife around. Love watching the birds I wouldn’t get otherwise.

I save my seeds. Sometimes i get grocery bags full. When theres an abundance i gorilla garden- spread them all thru the wild places in my community. If they grow great, if not hopefully the wild creatures got to eat and enjoy them💖

I grew sunflowers in my pollinator garden from seeds specifically packaged as such, but also ended up with volunteer sunflowers from seeds dropped by the birds from their feed. It was kind of fun to see the different varieties pop up, including a reblooming sunflower plant which I’d never encountered before. (The sunflower had a large top flower but then sprouted smaller sunflowers along the multiple branches.) Thanks for the tutorial!

I saved sunflower seeds last year and planted those suckers EVERYWHERE this year ---- they grew, but not true to the originals. Most had no flowers and looked like huge weeds. lol ---- Next time I'll read the package to make sure they are heirlooms before I save all those seeds. 😂

Brilliant video. Great tutorial - very informative. However, where were you fifty years ago when I had a house with acreage and grew sunflowers...? Oh, that's right...never mind. Always a pleasure to watch you educate and elucidate: truly one of the most informative channels on the platform which also doubles and a spiritually calming balm. Thanks for everything that you do, and do so well.

Luke, Not just the seeds are edible--when it's still fresh, you can roast & eat the whole sunflower head. I've been told it can be quite yummy. 😋😊

When I buy veggies that are packed in a mesh bag, I use the bag for various things. That would work great.

My method is to use a mesh bag. I bought the bags for produce. I save one or two flowers as they are just about at their peak of beauty and leave them on the plant. The flower dries on the plant, although I have made exceptions and finally pulled them when consistent rain is an issue. I cut the stem once the head has started to curl and is dry. I get my seeds, usually only one or two nice flowers, and the rest for the birds. Half my saved seeds are for next year, and half are for my seasonal eating. That is why I save from the beast flowers. :-)

Very interesting! You didn't mention which varieties are best for seeds that you harvest to eat. I would like to grow some for that.

Here in the south, all kinds of insects will eat the sunflowers before they even bloom. How can I go about saving my sunflowers from all the insect pests that invade them? I'm in middle Georgia on the border of zone 8a & 8b.

what's wrong with feeding the wildlife?

Nothing if that's the intent. But if you're growing them to feed yourself, you might not want to share with Bambi, Thumper and friends.
