they knew I was a Laowai in Shanghai, I was at a jewelry store trying to buy something for my mom, the woman selling me this Jade dragon kept saying "I give you a discount, you remind me of my son" eventually we both stopped trying and the same lady actually was pouring tea for everyone (it was also a tea shop) and someone asked her "do you have any children?" she replied with "no, I have no children" and I'm just thinking "hol up"

Hi, I just found your videos and I love them! just want to comment on the topic, my lecturer said that when outside of China it's fine to refer Mandarin as 中文 because people will still understand that you're referring to Mandarin. But if you do it in China, people might get confused because 中文 literally means 'Chinese Language' and there are so many Chinese languages in China. 普通话 pǔtōnghuà -> 'commonly spoken language' might be better or 汉语 hànyǔ -> 'language of Han' which is even more precise

Excellent videos you two are a great team! I am married to a 1st generation Mandarin speaking Beautiful Chinese girl and I want to learn the language. It is very difficult for me even know I live in the bay area with alot of mandarin speakers. I have subscribed to your channel and I hope to learn many useful things. I had one suggestion, when you teach a new word can you please slowly pronounce it emphasizing on the letters in each word? Its hard to say it right when you speak so fast! Thanks!

Okay, true story: I once walked into a KFC in Taiwan and the girl at the counter said "外國人! 我不會講英語! 有人會講英語嗎?" and I said "沒問題! 我會講中文!" She was so relieved to hear that! Another time I went out to do some translation work and the people asked me "你會講中文嗎?" and I thought to myself sarcastically "No, I can read it but I can't speak it" Well, I guess a person could read Chinese and not know how it is pronounced but typing Chinese usually requires one to know how to write Chinese phonetically. :)

This is super late but if anyone else is wondering, according to my chinese teacher when people use 一点儿 (yi diar) they normally speak with a Beijing accent. Since Beijing is the capital it is considered standard mandarin to say 一点儿 (yi diar).

I guess it's respectful socially. Imagine you worked in a shop and a French person came up to you and said 'Parlez-vous français?' and you didn't know a word of French. Would just be confusing and you'd be thinking 'Why are they speaking French at me?' (replace French with a more difficult, less well-known language and it adds to the confusion)

Guys, can you please also provide simplified writing in your lessons? I don't think newbies ever learn traditional glyphs

b33blebrox To tell the truth...that what you said is pretty stupid. -_- Because newbies WILL learn traditional characters IF they WANT. I'm also learning traditionals and I know already about 500 characters in Japanese and 100 in Chinese, since I started learning Chinese in January and Japanese 2 years ago. : )

+Shane839 They are very interchangeable, you can say either one. But, yīngyǔ refers to more spoken English whereas yīngwén refers to more written English. HOWEVER, wǒ shuō yīngwén is just as correct as wǒ shuō yīngyǔ. Personally, I always use yīngyǔ when I'm saying 'English language' no matter what the context is.

i think you are right #renza88 . the confusion is becuase maybe #squigoo learned the word as "dianr" but it is "dian+er=dianr". "er" is just a particle word which makes meaning when added to some other words but not so necessary to use with "dian" but maybe people at some places like to use to make it sound better.
@shannonfickling449
10 жыл бұрын
I think the "r" sound added to certain words is usually a northern dialect. Like in Bejing they might say it that way. It's not wrong. The girl on youtube from yoyo chinese is from northern china and she talks about that in one of her videos.
