I am from the mountainous part of Mayagüez and my natural pronunciation of the R is "similar to French", like the rest of my family. My daughter also pronounces it sometimes like I do. But my wife, in this case, doesn't pronounce it that way. She is from the coast of the same municipality.

In my area it is mostly use with double Rs, like Carro or Perro for example. I remember moving to New Jersey as a little kid and was put in an all Hispanic class for kids who didn’t fully spoke English, and as the only kid from Puerto Rico all the South American kids would make fun of my french R 😭

ooo I'll look into Corsican immigration there! I was reading some wiki pages recently about the influence of the canary islands and andalusia on the accent too. It's such a cool mixture of so many things!

@@ReganShorter Yeah.. I molded alot of words from many incomers.. I was in an Uber here in Charlotte and the guy was from a western African country and Mofongo is Fufu in Cuba as in that African country and okra we call Guigambo o Guimbombo as in that African country... In Louisiana I think it Gumbo..a okra style soupy mix.. And we call Bus "Guagua" as in Cuba..Dom Rep .. Pto Rico and northern Venezuela which Guagua comes from the Canary Islands..

The R sound is something very interesting to me and I wish we had more information on it. I have read that it comes from the French. Most Puerto Ricans pronounce the R this way unless they try to speak “proper” Spanish

That's what I heard too! I think the Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico, and all the different influences it has, are so interesting

I LOVE the central plaza in Barranquitas! The gazebo is so beautiful and contrasted with those modern buildings in the square too. I just love it!

Why do they use the "L" instead of the "R"? Who started that?😅

The wikipedia page on Puerto Rican Spanish is so interesting and actually discusses this briefly. Apparently the change from r -> l also happens in the Andalusia region of Spain, however I think the Canary Islands had the biggest impact on the spanish spoken in PR. Here's that page if you want to read it too! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rican_Spanish
