Just the tip from somebody who works digitally most of the time anymore. When you are trying to align layers put your top layer on a different blend mode. It'll vary depending on the colors of the piece. Reduce the opacity just a little bit. And then you have a transparent but very visible top layer that you can use to align. When you get everything set simply change the opacity and blend mode back together. This will save you a ton of time and frustration.

Jim Bennett I was about to suggest the same haha. Playing with opacity would likely cut the time it takes down significantly.

3 days before 2024 and thanks for this video. I've been researching how to do all my work through scanning. My artwork is just a bit bigger than a3, so this video was definitely worth watching and the comments from @1SnarfyDude was also helpful. Love your art. Thank you once again and have a lovely New Years!

Hey Val! I'm not sure of you remember but last year, we mentioned possibly doing an art collab together. It really surprised me so much that you didn't say no to this idea because I'm such a small art channel. If you ever think more about the collab possibility, I think it could be so fun! We could each draw something so magical or based on eachother's birth months (just a few ideas). Of course I respect and understand if you fully decided against the collab but it could be fun! 🙂💖

This was a great tip. Another one, if you have a piece (original) that you can cut down or plan to cut down afterwards, putting registration marks along the edges works wonderfully. Make the top layer transparent so you can line them up, once aligned you can turn the transparency all the way up again. Crop, and blend like you did if there's a noticeable line. This helps especially for REALLY large pieces that may need to be scanned both top/bottom AND left/right.

Have you tried lowering the opacity on the top layer so you can get it to match perfectly? Once it's perfect, put the opacity back to 100%. Works really well. Good video, lots of useful tips.

Protip: If you left a border in your art work, draw pr tape a little cross or whatever shape ( a triangle is also a good shape) so you can match them easier in editting. Preferably adding 2 or more crosses. I see some professionals combine a circle and a cross so you can easily see ifyou need to move or rotate the layer, but for me just a simple 2 X is good enough.

Hey I know I'm late to this. Getting back into traditional art during this covid madness. I have a question and a tip. Question is: what setting do you use on your scanner software for levels and unsharpen? The tip: Photoshop has a stitch tool. In PS CS6 - its under file -automate - photomerge. Its made for stitching 360 photos together but it works well for artwork scans. There is also software out there that does stitching. They are mostly for photo but again, they work well for stitching large artwork. Cheers.

A masked gradient fill (gradient mask fill?) is a much faster way to blend overlapping layers. Does the software you use have this feature? (Yes this is in PS; I'm about to test Affinity Photo.) Beautiful art!!

Instead of blending the layers together, maybe delete the top inch of the overlapping layer? The shadow disappears and the image still exists on the other scan.

As i can't put the scanner lid over it because of the wood backing on the canvas. 2. Any tips for scanning colored pencil drawings? I found my scan was coming out very faded or looking like a photo with flash reflection. Thank you
