I have a few videos for this week that I hope will recap and reemphasize a few points associated with summer, heat and humidity. A couple of them will be like an extension of our printing in the summer heat tips video from last week. This week’s tutorial #screenprinting video is about drying your emulsion coated screens and how long it takes. In this video we will touch on what high humidity means for drying emulsion and later this week I will expand on printing in high humidity as well as a brief summary on what it might take to cool a screenprint shop. These will all be quick tips videos. Make sure to stay up to date and subscribe to the Catspit KZitem channel! How To Screen Print T-Shirts: Drying Emulsion Coated Screens Tips

You're so awesome. Wish you'd been around the first time I did this. It took quite a few tortuous over several days -- I only had one new screen and some gunked up old ones I ended up cleaning. And cleaning -- coat it, dry it, expose it, wash it, and ........ either not enough of the emulsion washed out, or too much. Start over. It took six or seven tries. I was in tears by the end (hey. I'm a girl, it was a big, heavy wood screen, and I have a bad back. It hurts just remembering it). I did eventually get it right (after a good night's sleep). I think getting the screens right is the trickiest parts of the process. Of course, everyone is gung-ho to get the first screen made and get to the good part, but my advice would be: prepare to work on just this step until you get it right. Don't expect it to work the first time. It's one of those things you only get by feel. Then you can get to the easy part. Otherwise, people are going to think it's too hard, they can't figure it out, and they'll give up after the first day.. Don't do it -- persevere and ask questions. That's why this guy right here is so great : )

;) I hear you. Thank you and I agree. It takes a lot of perseverance to master screen printing. It's not that it is so difficult rather it is easy to make mistakes. Great advice, thanks for sharing. As always Johnathan a great informational video. I don't normally comment, but last week I had some major issues pop up with my screens. I have figured out the problem and part of it was the humidity. Being in Maine and working out of my basement didn't help. I have a dehumidifier but never really used it.....I faithfully use it now lol. Thank you for all that you do for all levels of screen printers!!!! I look forward to what you do next.

Oh oh! I live in a one bedroom/bathroom apartment so I put mine in the bathroom. I really didn't think you'd suggest overnight. I guess I can sneak in without letting in light! Thanks so much for the tips! It's true, I tend to rush things...it's smarter to get it right.

Hi CATSPIT!!! Thank you for your unselfish tutorials. I am Jojo from Manila, Philippines and I would like to ask: Is it alright to several coat my screens and dry but use them only when I needed one or two? A rhetoric question, is it alright to store for months or even years a coated screen? Apologies for my stupid question. More blessings Catspit.

You are very welcome. I am happy to know that you enjoy my video work. Yes if you use a photopolymer emulsion you can coat many screens at once. Then they can be stored in the dark. I have stored screens up to a year and still use them. They exposed just fine. The key is to be able to store them so that they will not get ruined from light, humidity, or excessive heat. An air-conditioned room is best. Thanks for watching! www.catspitproductionsllc.com/ - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

FYI, as an old photo lab tech, too warm air can actually have same affect as light on the emulsions and fog it. We had that problem with litho film and pads for offset presses. So drying with a hair dryer or in a heated cabinet COULD fog your emulsion. cool DRY air works best. John

Hey that's cool. I used to do studio photography in Manhattan. But most dry boxes do have warm air to help remove humidity. Emulsion is over 50% water so it has to go somewhere. But you do not need heat necessarily and only excessive heat will affect emulsion and cross link polymers to the curing point. So keep the air warm and not hot. And never aim fans or heaters directly at the screen. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

So I'm thinking of making a dry box from 1x4 wood and plywood, and letting them dry overnight or even 24 hours. Do you think that would work?

As long as it has enough ventilation for the moisture to escape and you clean it out enough so there is no wood dust. You'll have to paint it inside and out. I have a video or 2 about building this thing. Check my uploads. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

hey guys. just a simple question... i know when you apply your emulsion it has to be in a dark room.. but once the emulsion is dry can i take it out into normal light before exposing it ? Thanks
@CatspitProductions

The emulsion coated screen needs to stay in the dark until you want to expose it. But depending on where you are working there may not be a lot of UV light making it possible to work with the lights on when exposing. However, it is recommended that you work in dark room conditions to eliminate variables. That way when you're first starting out you don't have to worry about emulsion fogging. It's just good protocol. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
