Hello. I am new to learning painting and drawing. Apologies if I’ve missed something, but I was wondering if you can explain why defining the values work when you’re painting or drawing. I like to learn in a backwards manner. An example would be taking a real life color painting, and explaining why defining the values work in the painting with regard to colors used to define forms. I am trying to learn how to use a prismatic palette. In that defining, the tones is important when you start using color this is a new concept and I am finding it difficult to match cadmium colors with the grayscale. I understand the idea of defining planes in a triad, and then to add complexity, defined the more planes for a total of five planes within a painting, but I don’t quite understand the idea of value scale, other than a simplified way to defined form? perhaps I am trying to do two separate things and trying to break together? It would be helpful. I do appreciate your slow mode of talking because I do have a hard time grasping concepts. Thank you.

thank you so much for your videos. They've been absolutely invaluable to someone like myself who's been struggling with recognizing tonal values. Please keep the lessons coming. Personally I'd love to see some videos in the translation of tonal values into actual colour. Particularly using the medium of soft pastels as I find it really difficult choosing the correct hues and intensity of colours. So glad I stumbled across your lectures, my friend. 👍

These lessons are a wonderful example of observation and simplification. Thank you, Chris! My trouble with value is most sharp when gaging highly chromatic colors. I work with the Munsell system due to the accuracy I need. I find that using dark glasses, in addition to squinting helps a lot. It would be great if you could share some effective technique to do that. Taking pictures in grays is not practical for what I do. Thanks again. Great work!

It does, you're just not squinting properly. You want your eyes to barely be open, so you're kinda looking through your eyelashes.

It doesn't work for me either. Even if I squint very hard. Maybe some people's eyes can't do it due to the shape of the eyelids?
@tbluemel

Try closing one eye when you squint and then try to look through your eyelashes. The idea is to throw the object out of focus and looking almost at your eyelashes while looking at the object (unless it is very close to your eyes) should throw your subject out of focus enough to make it work. Hope it helps because it took me a long time to become a proficient squinter. :)

Try Looking out for value in your mind first before squinting, propagating where the light is coming from looking out for cast shadow so that when you aquint the direction your eyes will follow in to notice the changes will already be there...I had this problem too in the beginning. Now when I do it i feel like i have some super power. Auto value ray vision😂😂(i still haven't come up with a solid name for it)

Thanks. This was helpful. Can I request something? Seen few videos around the web about how to very convincingly paint basic shapes like cones, cubes, spheres and cylinders. Like why would the lighting be a certain way... why the cast shadows have such a dark value and at what spot would highlights occur in these simple shapes. It may sound silly, but till now, I can't do this even though I've thought about it often and try to learn it from books and videos. Thanks.

I love your videos, they are really helpful. I just cant but notice how in shambles i get when i reach that 3 value statement part. Everything runs smoothly until i meet that step. Its also kind of confusing, since you are only adding a third value, but that third value can either be a halftone or bounce light or ambient occlusion. And if its halftone, or midtone, it can either be sharp or smooth, depending on the form. How do you manage which type of element you should use for your third value? much thanks
