How can we take the long view in a short-term world?
In a world awash with short term pressures hiding all around us in plain sight - in our systems of government, commerce and ways of thinking - how should we respond and rise to solve the 'slow burn' challenges the world faces today?
Richard Fisher is a senior journalist at the BBC. His latest book, The Long View: Why we need to transform how the world sees time, is a deep exploration of how temporal pressures surround us and drive us towards shorter and shorter time horizons. Fisher notes, "we have a certain time view which is built on our culture, our psychological habits, the world around us, but there are many other time views that exist around the world." We can choose how we perceive time. And in this conversation we chart the short-term pressures, how our time perceptions have changed and explore the tools we can apply to adopt the Long View - a broader perspective about time and our place within it.
Specifically, the conversation also explores: philosophical influences (Burke, Parfitt); the difference between The Long View and a particular branch of long term thinking known as "Longtermism"; implications of a longer view for government, politics and parliaments.
