I've just started ballade no.1 g minor, after waltzes, nocturnes etc. I think you're right Rob variety is important.

I have a little experience with it. I really like romantic music like Chopin. I could remember the pieces, and I am often more willing to spend time practice them. Baroque music is cool too, but they really give me a headache to learn even a simple song. lol.

Well said. Have a friend who got into playing with just 2 pieces and both by Debussy: "Clair de Lune" & "Reverie". Tried to get him into appreciating early music like a Bach Minuet with trills, mordents, etc. but he simply doesn't like stylized pre-19th century music.

If you've discovered a style or styles of music that you have a deep affinity for (for me that would be Late Romaticism/Impressionism and Modernism), just play what you love, not what teachers or audience members want to hear. Nothing is more fucking annoying than having a teacher assign me music to learn.

Hi Robert, thanks for the video. Can you suggest 10 or 20 must have classical pieces that a budding pianist should have in their repertoire?

10 or 20?! There isnt a set answer- if you are a classical student here are some ideas- Bach- 2 and 3 part inventions, prelude and fugues from the wtc. Classical- haydn, Clementi, Mozart, Beethoven sonatas. Romantic- Chopin- preludes, waltzes, Mazurkas, nocturnes, polonaises, etudes, ballades. Those are some styles that every student has to play. There are certainly a ton of composers I didn't mention that have repetoire worth playing especially in the romantic era.
