Think back to Isaac Newton's apple. Force = Mass x Acceleration. Force = Mass (1kg) x Acceleration (gravity @ 9.8 m/s2) = 9.8 Newtons 10 Newtons = 1kg Now you can substitute the weight of your machine (Mass) to determine the Force, then decide how much additional force you want to apply to overcome gravity.. then follow principals above. May the Force be with you :-)

So something about 450mm to 500mm frame.. and about 600g to 700g total weight.. should I use 1100kv brushless or go even higher? Planning to run 8 to 9 inch props 4.5 pitch.. I want somethong light to medium weight but really wanting a quad that flies super fast and jus really punches out from launch.. this is my first build..

Hi David, 700g seems light for a quad of that size. Using a quick check - a plastic frame, decent battery and 4 motors will weigh almost that much before adding the props. ESCs, flight control board, cables and receiver. I'd get a list of what you want to use and add up all the weights to give you a solid starting point on the all up weight. If we assume a loaded weight of 900g, running a 3s battery then you have lots of choice. You should be looking for a motor that provides about 500g+ of thrust or around the 150-160watt range. i.e Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 2826-1240kv with 8x3.8" props or similar. Hope this helps. Good luck with the first build, it can seem a little daunting but it's a great sense of achievement when you get it into it's first hover! If this is your first quad, a great buy would be one of the little indoor quads to practice on (Hubsan X4 or similar), very cheap and great to get to grips with before crashing a model you've put a ton of time and money into. Let me know how you get on. Happy flying!

This is a really good video, but I'm not sure I've got this right... here you say.. "Almost. You need motors and props that will give you a total thrust that is a little more than twice the weight of the model", then followed by; "You have it right, the maximum thrust needs to be a little over the all up weight of the model". In the video it says, weight + 20% / number of motors. My quad weighs 2000g. which means my motors only have to provide 600g of thrust. Great. I'm using 2213-935kv 850g motors. Only if you multiply the collective thrust by 4, I get 3400g of thrust. This figure isn't a little more than twice. Please help I'm confused! James.
@Painless360

You need motors and props that will give you a total thrust that is a little more than twice the weight of the model. Be careful with the rated thrust on those motors - I use those motors on a 3S setup and about 1.2kg is the max model weight they will handle (with a quad).

That was the clearest explanation I have yet seen. Here is a question for which I have found no good answers. I am looking at a range of sizes from, say 350 mm down to less than 100, so the MR copters will be quite light. I am looking at possibly making airframes using carbon fibre tubes and plates and the strongest adhesive I can find, so that the bulk of the weight will be from the battery and motors. What I would like to do is use the Gemfan 5x3x3 propellers (or their 6" equivalent) for the larger of these copters and the propellers from either the Syma X3 or the Syma X4 for the smallest of the copters. Is it possible to compute the average time to discharge the battery from the weight and capacity of the battery and motors, the properties of the motors and and propellers, and whether it is a quad, hex or octocopter? If so, how? Can you show me the equations? I have a mathematical bent, and so learn the details of how this all works when I see equations, rather than using a black box computing engine on the web. What motors/brands would be suitable for this, which are reliable? I don't care if anyone regards a particular one as 'the best' whatever that is. I just don't want to end up with junk. Are there any good books you can recommend on the subject? (without the words 'Dummies' or 'Idiots' in the title).

For calculating the discharge time of the battery, use the mAH rating. The equation is mAH = current draw*time. But note that the actual mAH will be less if you draw a lot of current, and the number the manufacturer gives you isn't always accurate. If you check for reviews of the battery online you should be able to figure out how accurate the manufacturer's rating is, and there shouldn't be too much deviation from it as long as you stay within the current rating of the battery. To determine how much current the battery can output multiply the mAH of the battery by the number that ends in C. A 20C 1000mAH battery is good for 20 amps of current. Some batteries give you a rating for both continuous output and short term output, so be sure you use the right one. To figure out how much current the motors will use you will need to either measure it yourself with (with the prop attached), or find someone else who measured it with the same or a very similar prop and put the results online.

Just curious about the comment surrounding a 4S battery swinging the prop faster and therefore needing a small diameter prop. For me, this doesn't compute. Here is why .... Relating this back to aircraft, typically speaking the larger the motor the larger the prop and / or the more prop blades . By way of example, compare a Cessna 182 Skylane with a 235 hp motor swinging basically a 6 foot two blade prop versus a Chance Vought Corsair at roughly 2,000 hp swinging a 13 foot 3 or 4 blade prop. So, when I think of going from a 3S to a 4S battery I think of a bigger and more powerful motor and therefore the ability to swing a bigger prop with more blades and push more air at a lower rpm. I know there is more to it than that as the weight of the aircraft comes into play, the mission, and many other variables. But, I am just trying to figure out if I missed something in your comment. If so, I am having hard time picking out that nugget due to my perception as given in the previous example.

You need to look at the tables for each of these motors, they are on lots of websites. You need to know the maximum size of the prop that will fit on the frame (bigger is normally better, I'm guessing about 6") and know if this is going to be a 2s or 3s LIPO pack. Then look at the rotor size for the pack you have for each of the motors and go with the one that is most efficient. You need to look for a motor that will give you a max thrust of about 360g each with the prop..

In "conclusion" slide, first sentence, didn't you wanted to write: "weight of the model" (including motors ESC flight controler etc.) and x 2 x 1.2? ;) otherwise the thrust would only be 120% weight and the multi would be largely under powered and would take off, but no much more. You should always make sure that you have at least twice the weight of the model available in total thrust. Adding more than that will just give your model more speed and power, and will mean the hover point will be lower on the throttle too. Best of luck with your build.

I tend to use the weight listed on the description of the item on a place like HobbyKing and add it all up. Be careful with the weights as they tend to be inaccurate so the extra 20% of weight you use when calculating the motors needed will ensure that you don't end up with an underpowered model. As explained in the video divide the total thrust needed by the number of motors to see what each one need to provide, so with a hex divide total thrust by 6. Hope this helps.

Motors like Tmotor and KDE Direct offer thrust charts with thrust number at different throttle settings. That is what I'm not sure about if I should look at 100% throttle thrust numbers or 50% throttle thrust numbers when selecting my motor.

Every motor will have a specific size of prop in the specs for the battery size you're using (3s, 4s etc). Using more than that will cause things to overheat and fail. Check the specs on the motor you're using to see what the recommended prop is for your setup..

Hi John, these motors have some great detail listed on the site. It's a shame that all manufacturers don't follow such good practice. Too often they provide very basic details that doesn't allow you to make an informed choice and have people (some of whom have commented on this video) to become confused and frustrated. They look like a good, if expensive, choice and will allow you to increase the rotor size up to the 13" and 14" if you find they don't give you enough thrust for a hover. I'd be tempted to start with 13" blades (if they will fit your quad). That extra may be useful when dealing with windy conditions. Good luck with the change over.

MARK 1 This is the danger when buying motors from places that do not give thrust values. Some of the motors they sell do provide that detail, along with prop recommendations. They source their motors from the same places as most others so the quality will be the same. Other vendors may have the additional detail you need for the motors from HK, so searching is worthwhile. Always slightly overestimate the thrust you need as 50% throttle does not equal 50% of the maximum thrust. Best of luck with it.

I have two questions. First, I saw many affordable motor specs, and in roughly the same class they all display throttle of, say, 300g at 4 ampers. But, with much more expensive motors of higher quality (like Tiger motors), I see that they have throttle of about 100-200g with the same params. So I'm in doubt, aren't more expensive motors supposed to produce higher throttle? Or does that mean the cheaper motors' throttle is just a fake? Second, when I turn some motors by hand, they don't rotate smoothly, I can feel some little "steps" inside. Is that normal or not and what is the cause of it? Never found the answer.

Yes but I mean in the test data they use appropriate props and some motors show 300g of thrust and other (higher-quality) motors only 150g, all in the same class. It couldn't be that higher-quality motors were tested with inferior props, I think there is just some fake data.

The idea is to use over sized props on these tiny motors and run them at 1s so i'll lose out on rpm but re-gain some of my thrust by using larger props. I am going to be using the MWC Mini Fc and Dsm2 all in one receiver fc combo. No GPS for now but thinking to give it a go after watching your video on gps with i2c setup, just not sure how you connect to the gps with the ftdi stick to set the baud rate, i'm guessing there are some solder points to connect to, will have to look into this if i decide to go in this direction. I think the point missed in the video is that prop speed is very important for stabilization. The reason for having a certain weight-to-thrust ratio (as you outlined) is because too much prop speed and you are burning too much juice and too low of a prop speed and the copter will be unstable. Stabilizing the copter is done by speeding up and slowing down props and you do not want a motor / prop slowing down too far. Thus, the reason for the numbers you give.

You need to look at the spec sheets that are with the motor. Most quality retailers will include this detail. For example look at innov8tivedesigns.com/Cobra/Cobra_2213-12_Specs.htm for one of the best examples but also hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8622__2213N_800Kv_Brushless_Motor.html for thrust figures quotes alongside the specs. You can also use the www.ecalc.ch/ site to calculate thrust and flying times (if it has a close enough motor for you to select). Happy flying!

Hi, This video is very helpful! I'm wondering, were You talking about the maximum thrust or the recomended thrust? Even the E300 has a thrust recomended of 300g/axis and a max.of 600gr/axis. For example if you take a quad f450 frame it gives you a total thrust recomended of 2400g and a maximum weight of the drone around 1000g (2400g/2.4). It's not much espacialy if you want to have a gimbal and gopro...
@Painless360
10 жыл бұрын
You have it right, the maximum thrust needs to be a little over the all up weight of the model. Many of my models are about the 1kg-1.2kg range and that is enough for those types of motors. Any more and they struggle.

Could you comment on specifically matching the motor/prop size to the application of the quad. I'm beginning to figure out that, if you want less agility and smoother and slower response time, say for videography, than a larger quad with slower motors and larger props would be the recommended way to go. If, you're into racing and quicker maneuvers than a smaller quad with smaller props and higher KV motors would be the approach. Yes?
@Painless360
8 жыл бұрын
You've got it - lower KV motors with larger props will give you far better efficiency, longer flight times but slower response to the changes in throttle. Smaller props in high KV motors are less efficient but can be far more responsive to throttle changes and support more acrobatic flight without failing. Happy flying!

Painless360, thank you for such a great video. I do have one question; in your example you stated hat you need to produce 600g of thrust per motor. So with that information you selected a DYS 2822 1800kv which produces 650g+ of thrust. Is that at 50% throttle or is that the max that this motor can produce? Is the idea here is to select a motor that produces the thrust you need at 50% throttle or less?
@Painless360
8 жыл бұрын
+traxxi2003 The idea is that the motors together produce thrust that is more than twice the weight of the model so that you can hover about 50% throttle. Some pilots who want insane performance build models with 3 times the thrust.

This video was from a time where there wasn't a lot of choice for multirotor motors and we call used plane power systems! :D Go for over twice the total thrust with the largest props you can fit on the frame. T-Motors have some excellent (if a little expensive) options for larger models with high efficiency for flight times. So you'll need to know the weight the model will be and the prop sizes supported. Best of luck!

Hi Painless, I have a motor related question. How do you figure out what motor is a "220x" sized or a "180x" sized? Or for example, for my first build, I'm looking at the Tiger Motor F40 II, theres 2300kv and 2600kv, whats the difference between those? Just how much power its using to spin? does it spin faster? Whats the difference between 2305 and 2205?
@Painless360
7 жыл бұрын
The specs should be listed in the detail for the motor. See the other motor videos in the 'Introduction to Remote control' for more details. A motor with more KV will spin faster and wither produce more thrust/use more power or produce the same thrust as a motor with less KV with a smaller prop.. Best of luck!

If you check the testing for these motors you'll see the differences between the current draw and thrust. For me the 2600KV motors are way too much and pull a lot of current on 5" blades. Down at the 2205/2300 level there are loads of choice and these motors are great for 5" props. We use mainly the Emax RS2205/2300 on most of the builds we've done this year and not had a single problem with them (touches wood!) ;)

Nikesh Bhattarai If the specs don't mention the thrust in grams then email them and ask. You also need to get an idea on prop size/thrust too. Figure out the weight of the model and aim for 2.2x that weight in total thrust from the eight motors. Best of luck.

Painless360 If I use 8 motors (4-pairs, each of the motors in a pair are counter-rotating) on my quadcopter, is each of the motors gonna provide same lift? Suppose my copter is 10kg in weight, can I assume that each of the motors I require should provide atleast 10/8kg of thrust?
