I just watched your “101 Medical Coding for Beginners.” I’ve also looked up information regarding ICD 9 and CPT coding on the internet. Your class is BY FAR the best introduction to the subject. Question: what do you perceive the job description means when it says “basic understanding?” I’ve honestly answered “no” on this question, and have been invited to interview. I would really like to get the position. Do you have any suggestions on how to be considered as having basic understanding? Thank you!

I’m not really self studying to pass the exam specifically, but I just wanted to give myself a leg up before I start classes at a university (best option for me) since I have VERY limited medical job experience, so I ordered the Step-by-Step books. BE AWARE the 2024 edition of the Workbook went back to ODD number answers!!!!!!! It’s so dumb just give all the answers for heaven sake, super annoying and you can’t get all the answers unless you are a TEACH instructor! And in the 2024 study book the answers to the Chapter Review theory and Practical sections are not in the book again you have to have be a TEACH instructor to get access. I’m just skipping those, still a tone of really great information. I in no way blame Victoria and this is an older video just wanted to make people aware of the 2024 version issues for the Buck's Step-by-Step Books.

Hi Victoria! Thank you so much for the tips in the video. I am taking AAPC's CPC course, but it is not instructor led, so I'm a little on my own as I work through the material. In addition to my AAPC text I also bought the Buck's text and workbook at your recommendation and I have been liking the textbook a bit better than my AAPC book! However, I'm getting a bit stuck on the guideline for sequelae I.B.10. I was wondering if you by any chance have a video on examples of all the different ways you could code for a sequelae. I watched your video on the guidelines but I didn't find that it got enough into the weeds for my understanding. I get so confused on these and not sure why. Thanks again!

@@lenacordova3460 I did well, but I do have a background in healthcare and strong anatomy/medical terminology knowledge. But there was still a lot I had to learn of course! I definitely suggest finding a tutor because I don't think the AAPC course gives as much information for people that have little or no experience in healthcare as they should and they don't give enough examples of difficult/confusing things to code (like sequela). Wyzant and LinkedIn are great places to find coding tutors and their rates are usually pretty reasonable.

It is possible to get a remote job with health records and billing/coding without medical experience, but it may require some effort and dedication on your part. Many healthcare organizations and medical billing companies are willing to hire remote employees who have obtained the necessary certifications and can demonstrate strong office/audit skills. Overall, while it may be challenging to find a remote job in the medical billing and coding field without prior medical experience, it is not impossible. By obtaining the necessary certifications and demonstrating a willingness to learn, you can increase your chances of finding a job in this field.

The exams get a refresh every January 1st to reflect the current calendar year's code sets. So, even though ICD-10-CM codes might update on October 1st, those changes won't show up in the exam until the new year rolls around. 🗓️ Feel free to use last year's books, but just know you might be at a slight disadvantage. For the full scoop, check out AAPC's official guidance: www.aapc.com/certification/faq.aspx " What year's books should I use? All AAPC exams are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, so we strongly suggest you use the current year’s books. The previous calendar year’s books may be used on an exam, but you would be at obvious disadvantage doing so. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use. The exams are updated every January for the new code sets."

I have my RHIT and I coded long term care for 17 years. I am wanting to get my CCS and thought I could do it by myself, but the PCS coding has me stumped. What is your suggestion for me to acquire the CCS credential?
@ContempoCoding
Жыл бұрын
With your extensive experience in long-term care and your RHIT, you've got a solid foundation to build upon for the CCS. PCS can indeed be a challenging component, especially if it's new to you. My suggestion would be to take a specialized course focusing specifically on PCS or ICD-10-PCS guidelines. Since you already have experience in coding, you might not need a full CCS course but rather targeted study on the areas you're less familiar with. Another option is to get a good PCS study guide and practice, practice, practice. Make sure you understand the rationale behind each code, as understanding the 'why' can often clarify the 'how.' Lastly, consider joining forums or social media groups where you can pose specific coding questions and get feedback from others who've been through the CCS exam. Good luck on your journey to earning the CCS credential!

@ContempoCoding

Understand the exam format and content: The CPCO exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, covering topics such as compliance program structure, risk assessment, auditing and monitoring, and regulatory requirements. Study the exam outline and familiarize yourself with the types of questions you can expect. There are many study materials available for the CPCO exam, including books, online courses, and practice exams. Consider using a variety of resources to get a well-rounded understanding of the exam content.

I was looking at the Preppy course for the program that you have been advocating. I'm a little confused on how the certification works. I see that you get a "certificate of completion" from Auburn University. However, to be clear....this isn't the certification that AAPC gives, right? This Preppy course just helps you prepare for taking the exam? Does preppy in their included price offer the AAPC exam or is that something you have to pay more money on separately from the course price? I would have direct messaged you or emailed you but I couldn't find where I could ask these questions. I'm very serious about possibly taking the course but I would like some solid answers from someone I trust.

There are no courses that exist that will make you a certified coder upon completion, including the one from the AAPC. In order to become a CPC, you need to sit for an pass a proctored examination. Much like you are not an LPN when you complete your practical nursing courses, you need to sit for an official examination. Preppy will prepare you for taking the exam, but you will have to pay for AAPC membership and pass the exam. You would also have to pay for membership and pass the exam if you go with the AAPC or any other company.

@@ContempoCoding Ok. Thank you for the information. I really appreciate your reply. I actually went with the live class through AAPC as I felt it offered everything I needed in order to be successful, including their membership. Thank you again, and I watch almost everything you put out btw. Even if it doesn't apply to me. I especially watch all the beginner stuff. I'm super stoked to begin my coding course on March 20. I started 2 months ago with AARP and doing self pace. I am having a hard time with coding integumentary. Do u have any suggestions of books or anything else that Will really break things down in simple language. Not necessarily just that area but all of it ? Thanks
@ContempoCoding
Жыл бұрын
So there's what they call lay descriptions of simple language description of the CPT codes that can be really helpful. There are some in books like the Coder's Desk Reference for Procedures or the AAPC's Procedure Desk Reference (www.aapc.com/medical-coding-books/procedure-desk-reference-code-book/ebook/) but you can also sign up for some coding tools that include them such as Find-a-Code, Codify, iCoder, SelectCoder, etc. You look up a code and it gives you what's involved in simple language.

Hello, I am just starting to look into medical billing and coding, on the AAPC site they suggest taking the fundamentals of medicine first to learn the terminology and anatomy. If I have very little medical knowledge would you suggest that as well before taking the medical billing and coding coursework?

@@melissalee424 I didn't have any previous medical knowledge. I started the AAPC package in April of this year. I definitely recommend it.
