Not to be the “Biltmore stick police” but one of your earlier visuals showed a tree being measured with a log scale stick, instead of the tree scale (diameter) stick. Good video!

Thank you for the good video. We are looking to sell our timber. We recieved a random letter asking about helping us harvest our timber from 97 acres. It was previously thinned out 20 years ago. The man is offering to pay us straight up 25,000. Withba contract that allows them to finish up some time in 2026. Does this sound like a good opportunity for us or should we go another route?

If i'm doing my own clearing for build sites and pasture can I not just haul loads myself to the mill? Skip the middle man? And would the mills pay enough for pulp wood and lumber logs to make it worth my time? I have a mill 10 miles from my property.
@treestandforestry

Yes that can definitely work. You’ll want to have them come out and price the logs before you haul them in. Once you haul them in they know it’s more work to take them somewhere else vs taking what they offer you.

Great question. For one tree like that you will more than likely not be getting paid for your tree, the cost to take one individual tree typically costs more than it’s worth. You will want to look up a tree removal company local to you, get several companies to give prices so you are for sure not over paying to have it removed.

If I purchase 50 acres in Kentucky what is an average dollar amount of timber I could expect to be able to sell? I realize this is difficult to answer.
@treestandforestry

It’s really an impossible question to answer as it simply comes down to the quality and quality of the timber. Without seeing it there is no way of knowing.

which type of tree is the most profitable to sell once you've already bought wooded land?
@russbolton947

Hardwoods (oak, hickory, etc.) will bring the most money, but it will take away from the beauty of your land, and you will likely never see it look that way again in your lifetime. Ideally you will have some patches of pine (loblolly, longleaf, slash, etc.) that you can cut, and then replant the next year. Leave your hardwoods alone.

@@russbolton947Terrible advice. As long as proper TSI is done pre or post harvest there is absolutely nothing wrong with harvesting hardwoods. In fact, they need to be harvested to improve habitat & to capitalize on their value before they begin going downhill and rotting in the middle.

I have a property in California Pines close to Altura California and I was thinking about selling my trees but I have no clue what is the process until I saw your video however it’s still very confusing because you keep saying, Your consultan where do you get a tree consultant and how do you know which consultant is going to help you. By any chance do you have someone you might recommend in the area of California Pines. I also was thinking about selling my 1 acre property it’s the same property where I have the trees.

Unfortunately the logging industry varies so much from area to area. I am very knowledgeable in ohio and surrounding areas but most companies operate very differently out west. All that said very few companies will want to mess with a property as small as 1 acre. If you want it cleared you will most likely need to find a land clearing company which may/may not be able to pay for the trees.

A logging crew generally need at least 10 loads of timber to make it worth setting up. If its pulp, that's around 800 trees. If you have chip-n-saw that would require 400 trees.
