Let me add one thing to save others time and frustration. I just went through this and without reading or watching anything on the internet, I took it upon myself to basically do the same steps, but heat it up with a hair dryer or heat gun first, then it'll pop right off. Another possible easy way I thought of would be to use CPUz or equivalent to run a stress test on the CPU for a few minutes then quickly remove it after shutting down and discharging the power button. Either way, this seems like you are going to have this issue with stock paste, and will need it to heat up. Use something like Artic Silver when putting it back together, I never had that problem with MX5. Lastly do be sure to triple check your CPU after it gets plucked out, I had to set some pins straight on the outer side of the chip. Not terribly bent but enough to need an adjustment before reinstall. I used a mechanical pencil to fix mine, but I suppose you could use a card, tweezers, tiny flathead, etc. Doesn't have to be perfectly straight, but as close to it as you can get it.

Thanks for the video, I installed the stock wraith stealth cooler, but struggled when I first did it because I didn't realize the back bracket fell off (Not use to this style of cooler mounting) With all the struggling I did prior including even lifting it off and putting it back down.... I wanted to reapply the thermal paste. I did this like a week later.... I was busy cursing at the wraith stealth screws because I thought they were just not unscrewing from my lack of faith towards them from when I installed the damn thing.... But..... I learnt that you can fucking rip a CPU out of it's locked socket & fucking panicked! Your method of getting it off was the first thing that came to mind for me... I just didn't feel comfortable defaulting to it, but said screw it and began to try to separate it with a screw driver.... But that damn thing held good.... (Slid around just not off for a bit) Either way after more cursing at it trying to make it line up to the screw holes in one go while my wife held the bracket I got it all back together & everything still works. I even got the temps down slightly using my Noctua NT-H1. (I repasted it because the temps were concerning on my 5600g, but apparently these chips just run HOT) I'll likely upgrade the cooler one of these days.... Never one that screws in like this tho.....

I have a Wraith Prism stuck solidly to my 2700x. My first mistake was to use the stock compound and use it for 4 years before trying to take it off. Have to try some head and prying it off gently. Edit: Got it off eventually. Tried first prying it off by sticking a stainless steel spudger tool under one corner but didn't even budge, just scratched the copper sink. Soaking with 99% ipa on and off four two hours did nothing. Heating gently, nothing. Finally I decided to lever the cpu off the heatsink using the whole length of one edge of the chip carrier by using the long edge of the same spudger tool. Tried to cup my hand over the CPU anticipating a bounce. The sucker did come off with a bounce and it was pretty tight. No legs bent as I mostly caught it with my hand and it fell back on its back. No idea where the original CPU leg protector is (mistake #2).

I managed to get off the CPU by first putting it in the freezer overnight (in a sealed bag with dessicant to keep moisture out) then taking it out and warming it with a hair dryer. I suspect that the heat sink and CPU contract and expand at different rates which causes the adhesive bond to break. After doing the heat/cool cycle, a strong push on one side of the CPU released it from the heat sink.

this could work but definitely not the safe method. The best way would be to heat the heatsink with a Heat Gun and soften the paste and then remove the chip.. By forcing it out like this, the risks are, microcracks (less probable) and dropping the chip and bending or breaking pins.. you cant say how hard its stuck and it could flip off with too much force and you may not be able to catch it safely.. best use a heatgun or hair dryer..

Ricks Tech its ight i took it off by putting alcohol and heating it up with a blow dryer then twisting it off. Sure i bent 5 pins but its fine 😂

Just gently *twist* it back and forth until it loosens, instead of pulling on it.

@@rickstechrepairs It really did. I was trying out other methods which never worked and bent the cpu pins while I was working at it. But with the screw driver, 2 seconds BAM. I wouldn't have had to fix the pins for more than half an hour in the first place if I did your method. Thanks again for sharing the vid.
