I’m 25 now, I started my plumbing career at 22 because of Roger. I always beat myself up for not starting earlier. But I’m in my own truck now (im a service plumber), I average 3-5 jobs a day, and I am always learning. I’m halfway through school to get my journeyman license (I should be a journeyman by 27-28?), and I am so grateful for the chance to get into this trade. Thank you Roger.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for legitimate plumbers. There are far too many fakes out there trying to scam people. Thank you Roger for what you do.

Plumbing Journeyman from Hawaii here. Just speaking on what we'd be required to do and comparing it to what you guys need to do in Texas, we'd need to add in earthquake straps due to all of the seismic activity that we have. Also, since our water is fairly clean, we recommend changing anode rods every 5 years (3-4 in areas with harder water). My personal cut off for servicing is 8 years but that depends on the condition of the heater. Thanks again for the video. It's always fun to see what other pros pick up and point out. It's a great way for iron to sharpen iron.

In my part of Arizona we recommend having a thermal expansion tank as well as an electrical quick disconnect for electric water heaters. My company hard pipes all copper and we don’t use flex lines for anything other than portions of the gas supply when not using black iron. I’m still learning though!

Gidday Roger, I hope when you install a new HWS you will also install a Carbon Monoxide detector/automatic gas shut off valve and also a Mildred valve? Why on earth was the drip tray outlet valve capped off. Hopefully you could install a tundish on the new install?

Roger up here were we have basements, NY, we set the tanks on some sort of concrete block to get it off the floor and get some room for the hose when draining, for the flush unless the flue is low. I had problems draining tanks, the service guy said for me to leave the water on till I got a flow going, then turn off the supply, it would drain after that.

Roger, do you have any experience or opinions on the powered anode rod units?

If there is nowhere to run a pan drain, I cap the outlet and place a water alarm unit in the pan to give an early warning of an issue.

The thing with not manually operating the t&p valve is you have to assume it will function currently when the limits are exceeded in the water tank. You assume its "safe". I have ran into several boiler that were over pressurised and the relief didnt pop.

Problem is that the anode rods are installed to tightly at the factory, it can be extremely difficult or impossible to loosen and remover. Another thing I don't like is that on some water heater brands, the anode rod is combined with the hot water outlet. Sucks

It's a TPR Valve and it should drain into an indirect waste disposal container in the same room as the water heater

I dont like that the tnp is going into the wall. In my state they need to terminate at least 2” from the saftey pan
@swackhammer2139

Similar here. Needs to terminate between 2-6" above flood rim of the pan

In Mass its max 6in off the floor. I dont think they would pass the t&p cause its passing through the wall
@solidsnake2085

Running it into a wall is a bad idea IMO. At least in the IPC it says that they need to terminate 2 to 6 in from the pan or in a conspicuous location. If it is going into a wall you'll almost have no idea it's ever leaking.

In my jurisdiction, if the water heater is inside the house (not in the garage), the TnP must terminate _outside_ the house between 4 and 24 inches from the ground. So, an inspection would require checking that out.

@@kirkdarling4120 oh ok around here ive been told they want people to be able to see its leaking only water heaters i see where they run elsewhere are old.

We remove them every week, and replace them with indirect heated boilers. A lot of heat is lost because of the exhaust running in the middle of the water. The air inside the exhaust is heated by the surrounding water, and will exit naturally. New air gets sucked in, and you’ll lose a lot of heat during the day. Also scale will build up surrounding the exhaust, and it will limit the heating exchange capabilities. Calcium is an excellent isolation product.
