I am so sorry; I have no idea how I missed this comment. It is basically DIY Animals at this point. I would say that Reptiles are my specialty, but I work with birds, mammals, fish, insects, mollusks, and of course reptiles.

Great video, here's a tip: to cut plastic lids like those you can heat a large flat kitchen knife on the kitchen flames, and cut the top with it instead of using electronics. Another tip, to attach the net to the lid use black silicone from a tube it dries within 6 hours, put some on the edges and put the net on it.

Mine only started hissing after I set them up in a really nice enclosure that is pretty naturalistic and started feeding them good. They didn't make any noise when I first got them from the pet store but when they get really healthy I think that's when they start hissing.

They hiss when they are in distress. If they are hissing on their own, they are either fighting which is normal among males or they are breeding which is also normal. I would not say that they hiss when they are really healthy; I would say that they hiss when the environment is right for them to fight and breed.

how do you handle humidity?

5:05 The largest by an easy margin is Macropanesthia Rhinoceros. I wouldn't worry about a housing video though. They sell for around 200-300 at least each. Just a heads up they may chew through the wire mesh, they can. Also they can get their feet stuck in the tiny wires causing injury. Best to just slap a thin layer of Vaseline/baby powder around the top inside edge. Everyone craps on feeding them dog food which is bogus. Even though Orin McMonigle literally said it's fine. They tend to hiss less if you handle them a lot. Not because they are comfortable with you, because they are are stressed.

The top is not wire mess. It is plastic with lots of tiny holes, and it has not been an issue. The holes are also too small for them to get their feet stuck. I am going to stick with not feeding them dog food. Right now I feed them a combination of Mazuri tortoise diet, ZooMed turtle food, and rolled oats for their dry food. I am going to stick with that mix. As for handling, I rarely ever handle them. I only ever disturb them a bit to check up on them sometimes. Thank you for the comment, and have a great day!

What do you feed them?

I give them rolled oats as a dry food. A commercial roach diet would probably be preferable as a dry food to properly gut-load the roaches. I also given them Zoomed aquatic turtle food. I have started giving them calcium powder because gut-loading is a much more effective way of supplementing compared to dusting. However I still dust them as well. Other than that I give them a huge variety of greens, vegetables, and fruit: Greens: Endive Collard greens Mustard greens Romaine lettuce Turnip greens Kale Dandelion greens Swiss chard Bok choy Beet greens Watercress Escarole Vegetables: Acorn squash Butternut squash Carrot Cucumber Yellow squash Celery Pumpkin (vegetable and sprouts) Bell peppers Green beans Zucchini Snap peas Prickly pear pads Fruit: Pear Banana Apple Grapes

How many males and females to start a colony?
@DIYReptiles
3 жыл бұрын
I am not entirely sure. I gotten thirty juveniles, and I had no idea of which were male and which were female. I now have a super prolific colony. I do know that you want more females than males. Maybe one male to every three to five females. The exact amount does not really matter, but I guess I recommend twenty or more to start a colony. I hope this helps!

They have the ability to climb plastic, they don't have human like strength that's required to lift clip on lids.

I am not sure what you are getting out here, but the original container I was going to use would have allowed them to slip out under the lid. There is a bit of wiggle room between the lid and the container, so babies would have definitely been able to get out.

Thank you for the comment. Roaches definitely have a bit of a smell. It does not really both me. Out of all of my roach colonies, I would say the Madagascar hissing cockroaches have the least smell. As long as you give the enclosure lots of ventilation, there should not really be a smell that builds up.

One question can I have them as a pet?
@DIYReptiles
3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Madagascar hissing cockroaches are commonly kept as pets. I kind of keep mine as pets, but you can keep them in terrariums and nicer setups if you want to. Also these roaches live for two to three years I believe, so they are not a whole lot of commitment. At the same time, they will love long enough for lots of time of enjoyment. Also, these are very low maintenance pets, so they can be a very good choice.
