As a non-German who has lived in Germany for almost 20 years I can relate to the "feet on the ground", "faceless" and "middle of the road" mentallity of Germans. It's the German DNA I guess, also the "being in your head", don't dream and don't be hateful, which are probably caused by their history. That's why I loved being there. Germany is in the middle of Europe, it has managed to constantly adapt over the years instead of chasing some carved in stone ideas. I guess you can hear that in the music as well.

French stuff is overhyped, I think german black metal, specially the atmospheric/ds end touches a certain portion of the heart that no other does, maybe except US bands, it has some of the most amazing atmospheres, and a certain melodicity to it that is both somewhat harsh yet very beautiful.
