- Glad it was helpful. The reason I didn't show the cables is that everybody's setup after this point is different - some use power amps and passive monitors, others use powered monitors, some are using in-ear monitors. What sort of setup do you have?
@GLBProductions
11 жыл бұрын
- You're welcome, glad it was helpful. Yes, you need at least one amplifier channel per aux output. Most amplifiers have more than one channel so it's best to think in terms of amplifier channels. Also, depending on the number of monitor speakers you have, you may need more than one amplifier channel. For example, if aux 1 is being sent to four monitor speakers, you may need two amplifier channels just for that aux.

What a great tutorial !thanks for the help.As a hobby musician with a simple home studio I often play venues without the advantage of a regular sound engineer, and get asked to help with the sound. So understanding how monitor mixes work and the limitations of some house systems is a great advantage. again thank you
@GLBProductions
9 жыл бұрын
Tim Scott Yes, when working at smaller venues you often need to be performer, front and house and monitor engineer all rolled into one, so it really helps to have at least a basic knowledge of how a mixing console works and how signals are routed. All the best with your music!
@GLBProductions
11 жыл бұрын
No, you cannot use an adaptor to combine signals, only to split them! The simplest solution is to use only one of the control room outputs, either left or right. If you need to hear a stereo signal then you will need to use two monitor wedges, or a monitor which can accept a stereo signal and then convert it to mono. Which make and model of monitor are you using?

more than enough to support the vocals. 5. Keep the pan controls on your laptop channels in the centre - this will send the music to both the tops and the subs. 6. Patch your graphic EQ into the send to the tops, and cut all the frequencies below 80Hz. If this make the voices sound too thin, try cutting less, or bringing back some of the lower frequencies. You may also need to cut around 250-400Hz depending on the room.

- Yes it sounds like they are definitely reversed - I suggest that you check the wiring from the mixer to the amps, and then from the monitor amp to the monitors themselves to see which amp channel is powering which speaker. Many church setups have very confused wiring which need to be sorted out before the system can be used effectively.

- I think you may be confusing subgroups and aux sends. When mixing monitors, treat each aux send (monitor mix) as a person, and ask yourself, "What does this person need to hear?" So for example, if you know that aux 1 goes to your lead singer, ask yourself what they need to hear, and turn up the aux 1 knobs on the relevant channels. Does that help?

- It sounds to me like the 'barrel effect' is the sound of the room. Some gymnasium-type rooms just sound like that no matter what you do because of the reflective surfaces and long reverberation time. Great for classical music, not so good for contemporary stuff. Some recommendations: 1. Make sure your main speakers are pointing *at* the congregation and not at the back wall. Monitors should be as close as possible to the performers - put them on a crate or something to raise them up.

2. Reduce bass as much as possible - if you are running subs turn them down or even off and see if it improves things. 3. Reduce the number of speakers as much as possible - the more speakers you have the more they will excite the room. Hope this helps, let me know how it turns out!

Thanks for replying Bruno. We mic all the instruments. The EIM I can run them stero or mono. We have one monitor Aux for the vocals, Guitar, Bass, keys and then I mix the drums with the congas. From there then I'll mix whatever the musician wants to hear more of which in our case is the vocals plus the fact that in a tight space we eliminate the dreadful feed back and gain stage space. What do you think. Thanks, You are Da Man!!
@GLBProductions
10 жыл бұрын
Joe Rubio In situtations like this I generally recommend two things before churches buy any more gear: 1. Remove everything but the vocals from the monitors - instrumentalists hear themselves through their amps and from the spill of the main PA back onto the stage. This will often solve the problem of having too much in the monitor mix. 2. Try using sidefills, which are small (10-15") fullrange speakers mounted at head height and firing across the stage - if these contain only vocals they can really help to cut through the level of the band on stage and because they are at ear height are much easier to hear than wedges. I have never heard a mono IEM mix that I liked ;)

As he said, using the CTRL_RM out jacks will give you duplicate out. It will be in stereo so you'll either have to have a monitor with dual/stereo input, two monitors, or just be wary that you're only getting one channel of a stereo signal. This shouldn't matter unless you're using some kind of heavy panning stereo effect.

Hi Bruno, thanks for all of the effort you put into your videos, they really help man! I have a question regarding the mixed channels for each specific monitor. I am wondering how I would I set up my system so that each monitor can have their own individually equalized mix (for example no bass in a keyboardist's monitor, but bass present in the drummer's monitor). I apologise if this is an arbitrary question, but I'm a novice and still grasping the concepts. Thanks so much, and good luck with the channel! Tom
@GLBProductions
6 жыл бұрын
Hello Thomas, nice to hear from you! In order to achieve this, each performer would need their own monitor mix, so they would need to be allocated one pre-fade monitor send on your mixer. Then you would set up each monitor send to suit the performer. To use your example, let's say the keyboard player is on aux 1 and the drummer is on aux 2. You would turn the aux 1 send knob on the bass channel all the way down, but turn up the aux 2 send. Does that make sense?

The music gets so loud that it drowns out the vocals. Then were trying to turn the vocals up so they can be heard. This then creates a very loud performance. Also, do you give other trainings on different mixers. I want to broaden my knowledge on sound to make the best of our church sound. Do you have any pointers?

Quick question for you. I am thinking about doing a home based set up (just for personnel use). The question is can you use a multieffect pedal and connect it straight to a powered stage monitor. I have a Korg AX 1500G toneworks which has loads of effects, along with cabinet sounds. Now you might ask why am i thinking that. 1, usually the pedals are at front and the amplifier is at the back. I want the stage monitor be facing my face so that i can hear it properly 2, The brains of my sound is in my pedal effects. I dont need added distortion or any amplifier related effects.
@GLBProductions

+Rehan This will usually work - the only issue will be whether the output of the pedal is hot enough to give you sufficient volume in the monitor. You'll need to try it out with the monitor you plan to buy and see.

Thank you very helpful. I'm assuming you can use this same set up for the sound guy to talk to the band? We have a wireless in ear monitoring system which we will plug into an Aux channel. Would we then plug a mic into a spare channel and send that mic into the aux of the wireless system? How would we stop the mic coming out of FOH when we turn the fader up to speak to the band? Thanks. Great video!
@GLBProductions

That's right - to talk to the band you would set up a talkback mic which is routed only to the aux sends and not to the FOH. In order to do this set up the mic gain and aux sends as normal, then bring the fader all the way down but leave the channel un-muted.
