Question how many times a day u feed the turtles? Also how often you change the water? I'm planning on getting the same tank for 1 musk turtle.
@AfroHerpkeeper
6 жыл бұрын
I typically feed my smaller turtles once a day, but often skip a day or two at a time. This helps replicate natural availability of food in the wild and means a bit less work for the owner, so long as they're still being fed the appropriate amount each feeding. I have a good filter, but I top off the water every week or two and replace it completely monthly or bi-monthly.

Hm... it sounds like the change is just stressing her out a bit. Three days isn't too long for them, don't worry. Technically, they can go for weeks or months without food! Is the bottom of the tank just bare now? I might recommend putting some smooth river rocks in there instead (large enough to keep her from trying to eat them).

Depends on the species and gender of turtle - if you mean a razorback, yes, this could definitely house an adult! As adults they should have deeper water however, so that should be taken into account. It might be best to find a deeper tank with a lid

great vid and channel dude! i have a question about musk turtles.. I'm building a large pond in the CA, specifically the central valley region ( hot and dry summers and wet mild winters). My question is will I be able to keep musk turtles in the pond without harming them and if so which species of musks do you recommend? Thanks in advance
@AfroHerpkeeper
7 жыл бұрын
I feel like that'd definitely be feasible - just be certain to enclose the pond well enough there's no chance of the turtles escaping, and give them adequate hiding places to hide from scavengers. I believe desert mud turtles are the only mud/musk turtle species native to your area, so I would say that those or yellow mud turtles are your best fit. You could definitely get most species to work, however!

I've bred and raised up many turtles over the years and not ever have I used uvb for musk turtles,baskers yes of course but musk and mud turtles don't synthesize vitamin D2 into D3 via solar radiation(uvb). The commercial foods made for turtles work quite well,I really like the Omega brand carnivore food and for treats and to promote active foraging I drop in snails and worms a couple times a week as well. Other than all that your golden afroherper dude!!
@Lalaloopstylover828

I have no proper prior knowledge on turtles specifically turtle care, but out of curiosity, does the tank for aquatic turtles have to establish a nitrogen cycle in order for the turtle to survive/ thrive or does this concept only apply to fish/ other aquatic species??
@AfroHerpkeeper
7 жыл бұрын
It's always beneficial to establish your tank beforehand, but turtles are definitely hardier than fish in that department. Fish take in oxygen directly from the water, whereas turtles are breathing the air in, so fish are more directly affected by fluctuations in water quality.

I have two red-eared Sliders in a sand-substrate tank. Guess they eat the sand because I feed them in an external container and find sand all the time. Also i witnessed once one of them was excreting, along with poop sand was falling.
@AfroHerpkeeper
7 жыл бұрын
So long as they're healthy with strong digestive systems and fine grain sand, a tiny bit shouldn't be a big deal. However, if they're eating enough that it could clog their digestive tract I'd recommend switching them over to river rocks or a bare-bottom tank

Get a uvb bulb and heat bulb. A mercury vapor bulb is both heat and uvb. Or you can get 2 separate ones. Uvb bulb and a heat bulb. You will need to determine the wattage based on the size of your tank, how cold/warm your household is and how far away you will place the bulb from where you're turtle will be.
