Hi Bobby. We typically have about 5" of substrate at the most. Our kits come with enough substrate for a 3" depth. The wild does not provide belly heat. Infrared heat comes from the sun, not the ground. They may find a rock that has been basking in the sun all day to lay on, that would provide belly heat, but that's not a constant in their environment. The physiology of reptiles does not dictate that the heat should be on their bellies. It dictates that they need external heat for proper body function such as an active metabolism, digestion, growth, etc. Belly heat a myth and a fad. It's not a wrong way of doing things, but it's not the ONLY way. As long as a heated area is being provided in the proper temperature range, your snake should thrive.

Any updates on how this tank turned out? It's been 7 years. I am speaking to people on some terrarium FB groups and most people are saying this size tank is too small for a kingsnake and real bio-active is not viable for a snake unless unless the tank is way bigger than this. Urates accumulation in the long term and health issues for the snake. I just set up a 36x18x18 for a baby MBK following your recommendations in the videos and I am now told this is not viable in the long term and I will never achieve a real balanced healthy environment. Would really like some updates on this tank! Thanks!

cali-king snakes need a big water bowl so they can submerge in so honestly I would not follow this advice. Kingsnakes love being in water especially preparing to shed mine will sit in his for 2-3 days just before he sheds and I always get perfect sheds from him. They actually swim in the wild and live around bodys of water, so not encluding away to submerge is kinda cruel and not natural. Kingsnakes also like to climb they're not arboreal but they will still take the opportunity when given. So I believe the opportunity should always be given for to take advantage of. I know my King climbs all the time, theres no point in giving them the ability to dig if they can't use the rest of there abilitys such as climbing and swimming. its all about enrichment not what you yourself want. I believe if we're unable or unwilling to give them these enrichments they shouldn't be owned nor should it be advertised to not give them these enrichments. We should be teaching people how to correctly own them and not how to half ass them and your ment to be a supplier shame on you
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
3 жыл бұрын
Hey there, a large water bowl is great if there is a reptile that needs a dryer enclosure, but the Terra firma Drains excess water to the middle and bottom layers creating the microclimate- style humidity spots, so there’s no need for a large bowl since the substrate handles this as the reptiles would burrow as deep as they would feel necessary to reach the humidity they need, instinctually. This set up is safe and sound giving them a more natural environment.
