Some of you have let me know that the water should be deeper. I'm aware that aquatic turtles not only enjoy deeper water but they thrive in it. I am trying to demonstrate the minimum requirements for baby turtle care. I use the rule were the water should be at a minimum depth the overall length of the turtle's shell. And being that the turtle is so small, the water can be more shallow. But if you are more capable to handle deeper water then by all means, do it! The was also a concern with that lack of lighting for this setup. And yes. Aquatic turtles and most other reptiles require vitamins and nutrients that naturally come from the sun. And if the reptile does not have access to natural sunlight, then proper lighting is needed. (A heat bulb and uvb bulb) In this video I state that this setup will be placed in front of a window in direct sunlight. But be aware that direct sunlight will cause a lot of algae growth. But, I was recently given information that all UV light is blocked by windows. So with this new information. I an planning a fallow up video that will go into more detail about turtle care along with a larger and more advanced setup!

i would get the largest tank you can afford and have room for. you can fill tanks all the way as long as you have a floating basking area and a lid. or, you can follow the 10 gallon per inch of shell rule. Also, the water has to be around 80 degrees for baby red eared sliders. when they are adults you only need it at around 65 degrees. also, these turtles can live up to around 30 years so you must be willing to take care of it for a long time. however many gallons of water are in your tank i would get a filter made for about 10-20 gallons higher than that. so if you have 40 gallons in your tank i would recommend a 50 gallon filter because sliders and painted turtles produce a lot of waste. feed it as many pellets you think would fit in its skull if it were hollow. That's great! But keep in mind that this is just a starter setup. There is much more that you should do if you want to give your turtle a long and healthy life. Proper lighting was not properly included in this video. A heat light and uvb light. But lighting can be pricey, so of you cant do that yet then I remembered daily access to direct sunlight. Outside in the sun. Uvb light does not goes through windows.

i have a red eared slider the same size as that and i've bought it (cant tell the gender of babies) an entire tub. i would say get them the largest tank you can afford and you have space for. If you want you can also follow the 10 gallon per inch of shell rule meaning, for every inch of your turtle's SHELL from tail to head is 10 gallons of water in their tank, like i said, get what you can afford and have room for. sliders and painted turtles are very good swimmers so don't worry about filling the tank all the way... just get a lid.

UVA/UVBs cannot fully pass through glass, so there's the barrier of the window and the turtle enclosyre therefore these guys will not be able to get the needed 78-82 degree temp/humidity without the help of a lamp....which is especially crucial for hatchlings as their shells are so tender and need max temps to fully dry/form/develop

Thanks for the input! And with the concern with the water depth is just the minimum requirement for basic aquatic turtle care. I fallow a rule that the water depth should at LEAST be deep enough so that the turtle can face straight up (parallel with the glass) and still be submerged. But if you can provide deeper water, then by all means, do it! They really do love to swim! And yes, all reptile need the proper vitamins and nutrients that they naturally get for direct sunlight. If this can not be provided, then yes proper lighting is required. A heat build and a uvb bulb. In this video I state that this setup will be placed by a window with direct sunlight and would be kept on a house that stays at warm temperature. And why not decorate? I'm am generally interested in that concern. And thanks for the input! And I will address these concerns in a future video.

Recently saved a baby yellow belly turtle from my dads constuction site and have a set up pretty much in place all i need is a uv light and some fake plants to complete the setup as you have it. Just wondering is it important to cover the entire bottom with rocks or can it be only partially covered. The rocks i bought dont cover all the bottom because there isnt enough. Also how much of a land to water ratio should there be?
@tm4productions795

Turtles don't really "need" gravel at the bottom of the cage. It's more for is to look at. So of your are happy with the amount of rocks, then your good! And as long as the turtle can get out of the water completely to dry the that's all the land he needs.

@tm4productions795

So I would highly recommend some sort of filtration. Turtles tend to make more waste then fish. But you can change the water day if you cant get a filter yet. But when it comes to the tank, no It doesn't have to be transparent. I've seen turtles in plastic tubs and even kiddy pools. As long as they have enough space and water.

So I've seen a lot of different websites and turtle "experts" say if you want rocks in the aquarium don't let them be smaller than your thumb, river rock basically, because the turtle could eat the rocks and it gets stuck in the digestion so you hav to take them to a vet or they die because it can't b digested. Is this different for baby turtles because they are so small so it doesn't matter what kind of rock you put in?
