Let's uncover the mysteries of making a 1660's gown! The 17th century is the most under-represented, and imo, under-appreciated era of historical costuming. But it doesn't have to be that way--and this video is a step-by-step guide into how to make the incredibly gorgeous gowns of the mid 17th century!
Even though there aren't any reputable patterns that are available for the 1660's, we do have several extant garments that have been made available to us for patterning! In this video, I'll take the 1660's Smooth-Covered Stays in Watered Silk Camlet from Patterns of Fashion 5 and show you how to make it, from the petticoat (which is one of the only remaining extant petticoats left from this era!) to the bodies, or bodice, of the gown itself.
17th century bodies were boned structured garments, the big sister to 18th century stays and 19th century corsets. The difference? In the 1660's, the bodies were the actual top of the gown!
Like stays and corsets, fitting bodies is a task unto itself. If you'd like to see an in-detail video on how I fit these bodies, you can watch the video here: • How to Fit 1660's Bodi...
