In this episode I show you how simple it is to sew in an invisible zip to any of your clothes, in just 5 simple steps.
An Invisible Zip is the most commonly used zip. As the name implies the zip is "invisible". It completes a garment/clothes look and appears clean, professional and is very versatile - it can be used for skirts, dresses, tops, pants, etc.
An invisible zip is generally used for tops, dresses, skirts, pants and can also be used as a design feature, you can even use them for cushions.
To demonstrate in the video video I've used calico fabric and a bright pink zip for contrast and easy guidance.
SEWING TIP!
I find it useful to practice first on spare fabric.
If it's your first time sewing in an invisible zip, do what I have done and use some scrap fabric to try a few times beforehand.
When choosing your zip make sure to bring your fabric with you to the fabric shop so you can color-match.
Also be aware of how long the opening is. You can get all different length zips so make sure you choose the right one. Just remember if the zip is too long for your allowed opening, that is OK, you can always cut the zip to length.
You will need the following equipment to sew an invisible zip:
1. Sewing Machine
2. Invisible Zip
3. Zipper Foot
4. Pins
5. Good quality Thread
6. Thread Cutters
To make it really easy to follow I have broken down the process into 5 simple steps:
STEP 1. Lay & Pin in your zip.
Pin in place, right side down to right side up of fabric. Pin from the top down and make sure the zip is sitting right up against the crease of your seam.
STEP 2. Sew in the pinned side, making sure you are using your zipper foot and taking your pins out as you go. (Don't forget to back tack) Roll back the teeth of the zip with your fingers, making sure your zipper foot is right up against the teeth of the zip.
STEP 3. Check to see the zip is sitting nicely and that your thread tension is correct too.
STEP 4. Pin the second side in following the same steps as STEP 1. Make sure to line up the zip together to make sure it is parallel with one another. Pin in place starting from the top down.
STEP 5. Sew in the last side.
Following STEP 2 place the zip under your zipper foot making sure foot is right up against the teeth of the zip. As you sew, roll back the teeth of the zip removing the pins as you go. (Don't forget to back tack.)
Congratulations - now you've sewn your own invisible zip!
