Pretty fabrics and fun to watch. Lots of work! I'm finishing a Round Up Time quilt that my Mom and Grandma started in 1950- something, and it's needle turn. I never thought of any other way. Cheers! Hope to see your finished quilt!

There are metal tools to help simplify the wet starch application. If the cost is a factor then take the round end of a metal nail file to help force a smoother curve for ironing.

I use cereal box cardboard for my templates. I then put the cardboard template on freezer paper and trace around the template onto the freezer paper. Cut out the shape that is on the freezer paper and iron it to my fabric, then cut out the shape about a quarter of an inch away from the edge of the freezer paper. I know that's an extra step, but it works for me. I could never do needle turn applique very well.

You might want to take a look at Shabby Fabrics spray starch applique videos.. she uses freezer paper for the templates and a stiletto to help with the turning while ironing.

Freezer paper is a different method. There are lots of options. You just have to find what works best for you.

I would quilt it after your top is complete.

That is a great option when you are going to reuse them.

Oh Hell Stephanie.. I was going to suggest for you some rubber fingers for pressing bc I too like my big iron .. BUT then I said to my self, hell carylanne you don't ever use them until you've already steamed a finger.. he he hope your beautiful butterflies quilt is loved for many many many years. I do hope you will show it to us all.
