thanks. this the first video I've seen with an explanation about the amount force needed to hone it. I've been pushing too hard and didn't know why it's not working. so thanks again.

If you do it well and keep good care of the blade, you'll only need to hone it every once in one or two month, but stopping needs to be done before every shave, and I even do it during the shave if I'm shaving a lot of hair.

Hi there, what is the best honing tools to use to sharpen your straight razor? I have a dovo razor which came shave ready, I bought a double sided wet stone and bought a shrop with paste for when it stop cutting so I can keep it sharp and never need to buy another blade again. I put the back and blade point on the stone using a X formation and I swear Im blunting it more than sharpening. In your opinion would I be using the wrong grade stone or would it be my technique?

---I know your question is 2 yrs old but hopefully if you've already figured it out that my comments might help someone else.--- -Q1: Whet stone 3000 grit or higher assuming the edge hasn't fallen too far into disrepair. -Q2: Assuming you're doing the stonework slow and with only light pressure on a high grit stone. I have a dual sided stone as well, 3000/5000 respectively, which work fine when followed with the strop. One thing you can try is to hold the tip of the front edge to one corner and swing the bottom edge up to the stone just far enough that you get the entire working edge exposed to the stone and then gently push the blade across the block, flip and repeat. The only problem with the X-pattern is that during the motion of pushing/pulling a blade across the stone, one end gets more exposure to the stone as the tip/point gets drawn across the surface which rounds it out over time if you aren't careful. -How I figured it out the hard way: Before making a flat strop I used an old belt and some sharpening compound. One of my earliest mistakes with the belt strop was not holding the belt taught enough (buckle held down with a toe and the loose end held up by hand) AND pushing too hard on the blade (rushing). Later I made I made my own flat strop out of another old belt (lightly or untreated so it retains the compound) and a slab of treated wood (to prevent likelihood of warping), this strop is also double sided, one with green tool sharpening compound, and one with jewelers rouge. The flat strop eliminates the issue of holding the (old belt) strop tightly. I hope this sheds some insight.

There could be numerous reasons for you feeling it is not working. Firstly are your stones flat? Are you using pressure on the stones? If so how much. Is the blade flat on the stone? When I started I thought I had it flat but the toe was normally slightly lifted off the stone. One of the most important things is torque. You need to lightly almost twist blade into the stone whilst keeping the spine on the stone. Now for the hardware section. You really need at least three stones. 1k, 3-6k, 8-12k and a strop. You don’t really need strop paste. It’s nice to have but the finish stone is good for a touch up instead of paste. Watch more videos too. This is one of the poorer videos. Nothing incorrect with it but not really all that great either. Dr Matt has some full on geek level instruction videos which are great for trouble shooting your technique.

Why didnt you just use the leather strop in the first place instead of wt stone?
@Basil-YT-
5 ай бұрын
You need to hone it every year or twice a year. It’s like a more extreme strop
@Ripa-Moramee

@@Basil-YT- No, honing is taking material off the blade entirely. How often you need to hone depends entirely upon the user and so many factors, the every half a year to a year rule is only an estimate or average. People who shave everyday with coarse hair may need to hone every few months. Stropping is used for 2 things mainly. The first is during honing. After you hone and take of material, a bur is left. A bur is basically fragments of metal, it's difficult to explain with words but just think of the blade as not being very smooth. When you use a leather strop, the soft fibres pick these small metal spikes/fragments off, leaving a smooth sharp edge. The other is just day to day use. You must strop every single time prior to a shave, and many suggest you do it after as well. Your hair is strong for its size, and the blade of a straight razor is, despite being made of metal, incredibly small. Most straight razors are made of treated steel that is is able to flex and is less brittle, to prevent chipping. So instead, it's very easy for the blade to get whacked out of shape. You won't ever be able to see this with the naked eye but you will certainly feel it when shaving. Stropping helps straighten the edge of the blade.

Yes, so long as you clean everything (blade & both sides of the stone) between switching from 6k to 10k so you aren't working on a contaminated 10k surface.
