I've used High Pass for ages but never thought of using an inverted mask. I'll definitely give it a try. Many thanks! Best wishes from Wales - UK.

Very old hat ... quicker way is to use blend if , if you want to restrict it to the darker tones

Thanks. Haven't used Adobe in years, but inverted mask tip worth trying in Gimp & Affinity. In Gimp I've been using wavelet decomposition (multiband frequency separation) & simply duplicating high detail channel at least once & using opacity slider in Grain Merge blend mode.

After sharpening the image how did you return back to color from back and white?

Hi ☺️, I didn't go back to colour. You don't have to turn your image into Black and white. It works the same for colour images also. From colour just go straight to the sharpening process. Thanks 😊.

push alt/opt. when you make the mask and it inverts the mask in one step.
