You are going at it the hard way. Just get yourself some sandpaper 50 grit (coarse grit paper for rough sanding) then some 100 grit (fine grit paper for fine sanding). You rake the 50 grit and fold it in half. coarse side facing outward. You cut the sandpaper several times all the way across and wipe down the blades with a clean soft towel. Then you take the 100 grip paper and fold it the same way. Cut just as many times as the 50 grit. Then wipe the blades with a clean soft towel and do it all over again. Your scissors will be razor sharp.

yay fixed it and I didn't even need to sharpen them. I have Fine crafting/quilting scissors that couldn't cut yarn very well. So I came looking for a sharpening video. When you said to take them apart I grabbed my tool kit and promptly screwed the screw in more and tested them on the yarn and it cut like butter. I had been running my fingers up and down the blades thinking they didn't feel damaged. Now my other pair are pitted and need to be sharpened but I mostly use them for paper or fine wire I know bad me. So thank you for saving me some time and now I know how to fix the other pair if I ever get around to it.

Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night kzitem.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

Great video, thanks! Lots of weird information out there on this, as well as lots of different types of scissors (I found out). Do you not create a bit of a burr on the edge from sharpening? If so, do you hone that off or let the action of the scissors take care of it?
@moviking
10 жыл бұрын
Great how to Jeff, most ppl just throw them away when they get dull. A easy way I use to clean up the edge when I notice them starting to dull is to take a piece of emery cloth (or fine sandpaper) and fold it over with the grit out on both sides then just cut strips through it with your scissors, of course it depends on how dull they are but it doesn't take long, give it a try next time you have a pair starting to dull.

You can't simply put the inside of the blade flat on a stone to grind it as scissor blades have a bow to it. Unlike haircutting shears which are thin enough you can bend it flat against the hone and it springs back, with regular scissors you will just end up grinding the up at tip and near the pivot, leaving the middle unground. You have to hone along the blade at a 90 degree to the edge of you stone. You don't have to follow the factory angle. If you want more performance out of your scissors, you can make the angle more acute. It is a trade off between durability with tougher materials vs cutting performance.

You'll never see more rude comments full of sharpening snobbery than on a video about sharpening scissors. You did good; I think what you were trying to explain was that scissors are usually only BEVELED on one side of each of the blades, like a true hatchet's blade is. I'm going to start on restoring a pair of scissors that belonged to my grandmother today; I'll get around to sharpening them soon, but today I'll be sanding rust off of the blades. They are a good pair made by Case, so I want to get them back into fine shape.
@Mygraciously
2 жыл бұрын
Can you please clarify? Am I to bevel opposite directions?
@slaughterhound8793
2 жыл бұрын
@@Mygraciously Look at your scissors, and you'll see that one side of each blade is flat and the other side has a bevel on it. What you sharpen is the beveled area. He was right, it is easier to see and understand if you take the screw out and separate the two halves of the scissors. Just be careful, when I took the scissors that were my Grandmother's apart, I found that the screw that held them together had a small washer around it that is necessary for them to function properly, and had to take care not to lose that. Also when putting the scissors back together, do not overtighten that screw, otherwise, you can get the scissors so tight they will not move to cut. I had to loosen off the screw somewhat after I put mine back together so they could be used to cut.
