In a lot of shaving vids I see more and more gents using alum sticks or blocks regularly on the whole shaved area. Alum contains aluminium salts and there is an ongoing discussion since several years about the negative effects of aluminium in deodorants to your health (Alzheimer, breast cancer, nerve damages etc.). Those sticks contain up to 30% of aluminium, much more than standard deodorants. And especially if your skin is irritated or even bleeding aluminium can get into your blood and body. The negative effects aren’t yet fully clear (some even say there is no proof at all), yet I’d just use it on small patches of the skin to stop bleeding and don’t use it on half of my face as part of my shaving routine. I want to avoid putting too much aluminium on my skin. Lots of deodorants come without aluminium these days because of the ongoing health discussion and changed customers’ demands, so it would be counterproductive to buy aluminium free deodorants but then put even more aluminium on even bigger parts of my skin after shaving with alum sticks and blocks.

Thomas Jefferson listen , one of the main things that separates men from boys and men from women is facial hair, why the hell would you try to go against what God created you to look like? There is nothing wrong with grooming your beard and keeping it at a certain lengh of your choice but shaving it all off? That's a big no no.. And a waste of money too all that money adds up, also your cutting up your skin and putting toxic liquid on it every day, when all you have to simply do is let your beard grow and groom it at the barbershop every few weeks vs shaving everyday..

Nice. I learned some things. Thanks! One thing I learned a long time ago from a Gillette publication from the 1960's, was that the beard has different densities. The cheeks/sides of the face and neck are the least dense and should be shaved first. Then the mustache area and finally the chin. The chin is the most dense. By going in this order, at least for the first pass, the more dense areas of the beard are given longer to soften with the most dense area, the chin, being given the longest time to soften. I just became a subscriber. Thanks again.

Hey Geo! Dave here from Bristol, England. Love your videos! I seem to have major issues with soreness after shaving. I use sensitive soaps such as Proraso white or Arko. I do 3 passes. I now have a Rockwell 6c that I am working with to find a plate that gives the least irritation. I have slight issues as I had Acne when I was a teenager (I'm 58 now) so my face is not perfectly smooth. I also have a 34c, and a Mulhe R89. I have used plates 3, 4 & 2 on the Rockwell with Feather blades. Do you think it would be better to use a coarse plate and work less but carefully or a milder plate? I have just shaved with the 2 plate and face is very sore. Should I just shave with the grain and have done with it? I find even going against the grain as you do here still makes my face sore. Would I be better to stick with a Silver tip brush or is super badger ok? Any advice you can give me would be appreciated. Keep up the great videos!! Many thanks and best wishes from England.

Since I changed to the save razor it has goten a lot better and easier. My beard grows downward on my cheeks and upward on my neck... (and diagonal upwards on the edge between the two). should I first shave my cheeks downwards and my neck upwards or should I go straight down first? Another question I had is. How do you know if your straight razor is sharp enough of if it need a new sharpen? I have a Square beard most of the time. If you could give tips on how to shave with it and a straight razor it would also be great. I also use a Safty razor and also wanted to know. how do you dispouse if the blades? The speed at which you do that with a new sharp blade in a safety razor is terrifying lmao.....Your skin must be really tough....

Here I am shaving with an old 2 blade razor shaving against the grain in the shower with just water wondering why I cut my whole face up lol I've always shaved with the grain and never had problems till I recently got alopecia in my beard from alot of stress trying to quit smoking etc and I'm having a hard time keeping a close enough shave to hide it till it grows back, also I have a deep ridge on my top lip which makes it really hard to get in there cause can't make it flat even stretching the skin, right side of my face grows on an angle and the neck grows sideways 2, is the brush necessary or can you just use your hands? Guess I have to get some cream ugh I just ordered some shaving gel but I guess that won't be as good? I never would have thought shaving would become so difficult lol

Thanks for this video. Great technique for going against the grain on that 3rd pass. That was one aspect of my technique that was a bit weak.

Changing the angle of your razor, users of straight razor have been doing that for generations, glad that you brought back that information for current shavers.

I know this video is ages old, but man do I have issue with my neck. My grain goes sideways. It’s very difficult to get my neck as smooth as my face. I cannot get the razor to lay flat to go sideways on my neck.

Nice info. As a straight edge shaver myself, I will pay more conscious detail to blade angle on 2nd and 3rd passes. One question though, I find that my beard growth is predominantly towards my jawline under my jawline except under my chin. I was wondering, do you or your subscribers describe something similar to you? It seems my facial beard growth is the wild west. Just looking for some encouragement/ sympathy.

Yes, everyone has beardage growing willy nilly! My neck hairs go in reverse directions on the right and left sides. I feel that your beard is like a fingerprint, no two are alike!

I think the against-the-grain pass is where I've been going wrong, as my safety razor experience continues to absolutely suck. I've been doing the lay-flat-and-tilt technique against the grain, as well. I think I've been scraping the heck out of my face. Looking forward to doing it this way. I feel like this can still work...

Your method seems great for a curved edge razor. But my Rockwell 6C has a very flat edge. I guess your skimming the surface method of against the grain works best with a curved edge razor.

Can’t just can’t shave my face ATG no matter how I do it my face ends up red and bleeding. At best I can do XTG, but on most days(every morning) I will just do one WTG pass, that way I can shave daily without irritation.

Geo, you're a great instructor and I just started using the safety razor about a month ago! My goal is to shave as quick and safely as you. Keep it up and on this video, I learned about the gradual reduction and how to angle the blade just right!! Thanks!!!
