On uncoupled devices on Canon FD Mount it is better to use the preset aperture mode. Here you had to squeeze the aperture lock button on the camera body. After you focused you close the preset aperture and you must alter shutter speed or the aperture, unter the metering needle ist on the square marking besides the "5,6" reading. FD lenses and and cameras are constructed for automatic aperture mode and need a correct input for the maximum lens speed. If your lens don't have this on the backside, maximum aperture is always interpreted as f/5,6, and so you will get wrong data from the interior light meter. On AV-1, AL-1 with aperture priority, you had to close the aperture lever only. On A-1,T-90,T-70 you can set the camera to automatic preset aperture mode.

I only learnt about this method after creating my video here. I really wish I had included this info in the final edit as it’s especially important for analog shooters. Thank you so much for sharing. I will pin your comment so others with similar camera models can see and learn.

Finally something that explains why my lightmeter is completely off when using the helios. So is there a way to compensate? If it assumes f5.6, the meter should be off by a constant factor, right? Or should i just use an external lightmeter? Edit: i somehow completely skipped over the first half of the comment. So to clarify: i just alter aperture or shutter speed until the lightmeter reads 5.6?

Hey, came across this video, this is the way I think of using the helios 44-2. I think these were originally used on cameras without meters. In those days an external meter would be used to determine the appropriate f-stop and shutter speed. Set the determined f-stop on the preset, turn the inner aperture ring left to get the maximal aperture to help frame the shot. Prior to taking photo, spin the inner ring to the far right, that will stop the aperture down to the desired f-stop without having to look at the lens barrel. I've taken action shots of running horses this way, reframing and stopping down rapidly to shoot. Later lenses used a pin to do the stopping-down for us (coupled to the meter). I love this lens and love preset lenses in general. Thanks for a great explanation, 2 ways no less! You're a born teacher!

Well done. Just what I needed. When the lens arrived and I moved the aperture ring to f2 and everything went dark... I was perplexed. Then onto google I went to search for answers. The charts you provided are especially helpful for the second method!

Disclaimer: It's been about 40 years since I last shot a Helios 44-2, this is to the best of my recollection so please correct me if the operation of the aperture doesn't align with this explanation. Apologies if it's a little pedantic. The aperture # on the lens doesn't indicate the aperture setting, it indicates the limit of travel. On manual Soviet cameras, to be able to see anything in the viewfinder you had to have the lens at f2, wide open, to allow ambient light into the viewfinder to see detail for focusing. Typically the stepped aperture ring was set to the required f-stop prior to shooting and the smooth aperture ring allowed you to quickly and smoothly rotate the aperture from f2 to the preset f-stop before releasing the shutter. That is why at f16 you have full travel. If the lighting required an f16 aperture for proper exposure, you couldn't focus at f16, it was too dark in the viewfinder. You would set f16 on the stepped aperture ring, focus 'wide open' at f2 then rotate the smooth aperture ring 'fully closed' to f16 to take the shot. If you set f4 on the stepped ring, once you focused at f2 your travel to close the aperture was limited between f2 and f4. Set the stepped aperture to f2 and the smooth ring is locked at f2. Hope that helps.

I'm so glad I got the Helios 44M, it has the normal aperture ring that goes from 2 to 16 with no random fuss or preset apertures... Also, the focusing is normal as well, it just extends out, so it's not internal, but it doesn't move the entire lens and in my book - that's a win!

Broo thanks for making this vid you helped a ton. I just took the helios 44-2 on a trip and had 0 idea theres was a 3rd ring used for preset. I pretty much did method two but wasn't comfortable using anything besides f2 or f16. A company should make a decal that goes on the aperture ring that labels the apertures in reverse.

I don't know what's going on with *your copy* of the lens, but the apertures are absolutely not meant to be backwards like that. Your copy was probably taken apart and put back together backwards at some point.

hey man, thanks for making this video. I've been in the market for a 44-2 for my AE-1 for a while now and i've been curious how metering works when you don't use an FD lens. I'd like to ask you a question and i'm hoping you can answer. i've read conflicting things on how you are supposed to meter with an adapted lens. Some people have said to do it like you did in the video, essentially use the camera like you typically would with a canon lens. Others have said that you are supposed to lock the lever on the side (the DOF preview button beside the lens) to use stopped down metering. when you do that, the camera is supposed to stop telling you which f-stop to use and instead just tells you when your exposure is correct(the needle will point to the index mark beside 5.6 on the scale). You're one of the few people i've found with this set-up to actually test it and i would appreciate it so much if you could look into this for me. It's so hard to find any concrete information on this type of vintage gear. Thank you again!

Hey, Awesome question and something I never came across when reading forums etc. I just went into my backyard and tested this technique out and it works well! I made sure to have the DOF preview button switched on. Then I held the shutter button halfway whilst simultaneously scrolling the aperture ring until the light meter pin landed on 5.6 or that "correct" mark. When I checked where the aperture ring landed on the lens, it was spot on! (by spot on, I mean the equal opposite to what the light meter would read). So essentially this is a much more reliable way to avoid the pre-set ring confusion and just shoot on the run.

@@LachlanBain Thank you so much for taking the time to test this. I really appreciate it! I've researched a little more and i think you might not even actually have to flip the DOF preview switch for the meter to work as i described. I think the camera just defaults to that type of metering when you don't have an FD lens attached. I went ahead and ordered the same lens, so hopefully i'll be able to test this myself. Thanks again!

Hey man, looking at the comments here you've obviously helped a lot of people. But my Helios doesn't require this degree of interaction. Maybe it got modded so the aperture ring instantly affects the aperture, but I just dial it in while looking through the viewfinder, like I would with any other lens. Is there a philosophy of photography that I'm not aware of at work here? Or does your Helios not change the aperture until the picture is being taken? Not having a pop - like I said, you've obviously helped a lot of people here. Just seems like a really convoluted way, based on my experience of my lens.

Do you know of any other 'visual reasons' why this lens would be attractive other than the 'swirly bokeh' effect? For users of the Helios 44-2 lens this tutorial will be forever helpful. What I bought the lens for, it's main attraction for me, is the 'swirly bokeh.' This bokeh effect is unique to this lens and is quite attractive for 'dreamy' shots. If you want this bokeh effect you need to be shooting wide open for it to be most pronounced. I just leave the lens wide open and let shutter speed and ISO control the light and that is that as far as I'm concerned.

The only addition to Method #1 is that after setting the preset, open it wide open to focus then turn all the way down to take the shot. You can’t close the aperture smaller than the preset.

So in order to expose properly, I need to open first at full open aperture, check the lightmeter, then set the aperture to the recommended aperture of the lightmeter? My copy of Helios 44/2 have no preset ring, and me and my Canon AE1 is really confused right now 😅 how to expose this properly? Thanks!

@LachlanBain

Thanks. Focusing with this lens is different depending on which camera body you are using. With the Canon AE-1 you have to focus using the split circle in the middle of the viewfinder. Just align both halves of the circle so the image is no longer split and you will then be in focus. kzitem.info/news/bejne/0IGZn2ZuiYucmKQ skip to 6:00 to see a nice little demonstration here. Hopefully theres nothing wrong with the lens itself and its not been tampered with in the past.

Honestly the focus mark doesn’t fall exactly on the infinity mark on the lens. It’s super close though.
