When clicking on any of the ships seen in "antartica", and this is also the reason Dave didn't do that on stream, the following text appears: "This vessel is out of Coastal AIS Range. Access vessel & voyage details via Satellite." You are then offered to purchase a plan to view globaal satellite tracking data. So "Coastal AIS" is free for everyone, while "Global Satellite Tracking" is a feature that the website has recognised as a way to earn money.
@pixlhound
Жыл бұрын
It's not strictly down to the website using it as a way to earn money. AIS is provided by the coastal services of countries as they use it to monitor their own waters, but satellite tracking is more guarded and tends to be better for international waters (though not always) - often the website owners will have to pay for access to that service themselves and so will pass that cost on.

Connect two points with a secant at around 45 degrees apart (not a magic number, just easy to judge and big enough to see). Rotate your diagram so that the secant is horizontal. The arc above the secant line is the hill of dirt or water. This guy's aware that circles are constantly dropping away, like you say always at the top of the bulge, he just doesn't think the earth's cross section is circular. @Dan: Regarding the discussion about ships that appear to be on the antarctic mainland: It's very simple: They are not. AIS, the system that generates this data, is an old system that pre-dates security considerations. There's no encryption, no authentication. Anyone can broadcast anything. And so they do. Vessel crews put in totally random data or no data at all, for all kinds of reasons: Sometimes AIS gets fed wrong data to broadcast a wrong position (or none at all) to avoid being identified by pirates. Or to distract competing fishing vessels if you found a good spot to fish. Or the data soruce is broken or misconfigured. Or it's just a student in maritime academy playing around with the gear. Or it's people like me, demonstrating this in conferences with equipment costing literally 100 EUR to make a point. Or there's intentional GPS spoofing going on (GPS signal gest received by vessel, errornous position calculated and fed as-is into AIS and transmitted out with the wrong location - and the crew possibly doesn't even notice or care because they are fishing or docked or underway with a fixed course. This is known to happen especially in the vicinity of a certain palace on the shore of the black sea that's been used by a certain russian president, presumably for drone protection. Or an engineer is doing comissioning / maintenaince to the equipment, manually feeding it demo data. Heck, in some asian ports you can even see this system ab-used to advertise brothels - making them appear on sailors screens on the bridge. Literally 20% of all data in AIS is pure garbage. Right now, at this very moment, I see 5 targets appearing to be onshore antarctica, all fishing vessels - and I guarantee you that every single one of them is safely on the ocean, totally somewhere else, probably having found a rich fish swarm that they don't want anyone else to find. I would assume they in reality they are in the indian ocean and have set an offset to shift their position longitudinal. Now you CAN actually dig into these individual cases: Most of these websites hold a record of the previous positions of the ships, with timestamps etc. So you can easily see that they left e.g. an indian port just mere hours ago and at some point all of a sudden jumped thousands of miles to antarctica. BUT: usually this kind of backlog data isn't available for free. So if you want to dig in, get a subscription for a month, find some examples and re-trace their paths and you'll find that they jumped positions in impossible ways. Hope that helped.

I work in Sweden and i have a GPS unit on myself for security incase of accidents. If i for some reason leave my work area it will ping my Teamleader and show him where i am so he can check on me. And at one point i sent an alarm to my teamleader saying i am currently traveling 1023mph outside the coast of Nigeria

Dan! Once again a great video. Proof once again that, while you can’t make this stuff up, flerfers will still try to. 1. Thanks for the thumbnail! I’m a huge Terry Pratchett fan, and it was wonderful to see a pic of of the world turtle Great A’tuin, swimming through the cosmos with Discworld upon its back. 2. I lived for some years on a sailboat and would occasionally post questions on flat earth sites for fun (e.g. how does gps work on a flat earth, explain lighthouses, explain sunsets and sunrises, etc). FE Dave got wrapped up with a Kiribati-flagged vessel past the ‘Antarctic Wall’. Vessel transponders, as you rightly surmised, derive their position from a connected or embedded gps. A new installation (fresh out of the box), non- or incorrectly-configured setup, or just erroneous position data would result in an incorrect position being broadcast. The actual transponder could be anywhere on the planet. And the Kiribati registration is most likely a ‘flag of convenience’ registration, for tax avoidance or the like. Many commercial ships are registered under flags of convenience, including from nations such as Bolivia and Mongolia, which are landlocked (explain that one, Dave!) Keep up the good work; it’s frustrating at times to deal with grown adults lying through their teeth and acting like they’re five, but entertaining to watch their struggles with reality nonetheless. The challenging part is to discern who are the conmen and who are the conned

Having transport ships registered to small countries and islands is not uncommon, this is done for tax avoidance. Its pretty easy to register your ship to a country with almost no tax even when it belongs to a company in US or Europe. Besides that Kiribati is known for having experienced seaman.

1. You can see water to curve 2. You can feel the Earth to rotate 1: in a glass of water, the surface of the water is always slightly curved at the edge where it touches the glass. It usually curves up. If you fill the glass to the top, you can add a little and make the level higher than the glass, and there you have water surface curved down. An even better: look at the drops of water - they are all curved. 2: When you are by the sea, you can see the existence of tide. On certan places, you see and feel it directly (it happen to me on a very shallow beach). That is the Earth rotating. There are two high tides on two opposite parts of Earth, traveling the same speed the Earth is rotating. One attracted by Moon, the second rised by centrifugal force. That means we have high tide twice for every Earth rotation, that means every 12 hours. I hope Flath Earthers don't deny the existence of tide.

@@isaacbruner65 It's one condition frequently used by hams if they want to reach stations that are farther away than a line-of-sight link would allow. Given a flat earth, using that wouldn't even be necessary as you'd have direct line of sight to any given point on Earth so you should have been able to reach any other station. However, it definitely doesn't work that way.

I like flat earthers. They’ve given me so many great lunch breaks, the laughs and I get to learn new things sometimes! Thanks Dan!

I find it odd that flat earthers will often say "Water can't stick to a ball, so it must be flat" but where would the water fall? what on earth would be pulling the water off of the globe?? unless they're so mind numb as to think there's such thing as up and down in space, I just don't get this point. There is no other force great enough to pull water off of a globe, so what else would it do? It's crazy that these people struggle to understand gravity which is personally one of the easiest aspects of science.

The really scary thing about this is, and I mean really scary.... Dave actually believes in what he is saying... Terrifying.

Confidence tricksters are very good at appearing to believe the stuff they spout. I mean, I'm not saying flerfer *is* a con-man, but he certainly comes off the same way that con-men do.

5:50-5:58 - Nope. I was in the navy and I was a strike analyst. This is patently untrue. Also, what does he think he means my "navy artillery people"? That's not a thing.
