My answer to your question at 6:40 is that he is singing in his own style, following his own interpretation of the song. He is a classically trained artist with master's degree who also plays the role of music director of the "Forestella." When Koreans try to pronounce foreign languages, particularly European languages, they need to use their mouth and tongue carefully and intentionally to make a proper sound, articulating each sound that do not exist in the Korean language, so that their mouth movement may not look natural.

Yesss thanks for introducing forestella to sam 😍😭😍😭 we’ve been trying to get sam to recognise them.. and again, thank you for reacting to them again! I really love the discussion here.. and yeah, he is normally a classical leggiero tenor, not a pop person that’s why his style is very unique 😁❤️😁

This video was super interesting! My first language is spanish and Mingyu's pronunciation is surprinsingly good. He kind of does sound like a foreigner, but not because he is bad, but because the way he makes the sounds are too 'clear' and usually people here don't speak/sing that well haha. However, it's actually very pleasant to listen to him because you can understand a 100% what he's singing, which I think it's one of the most important aspects if you're going to sing in another language. Another thing I like is that he's using a very neutral spanish. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it's nice because in spanish-speaking countries there is a huge variety of accents and sometimes it's hard to even understand each other. So it's very helpful that he keeps it neutral because that way anyone can enjoy his spanish with no problem. I really like his voice and the way he sings in general, but that's just a personal preference haha.

he makes every sound clear because of his classical training in singing. During a live streaming he said he had to consciously restrain himself during pop songs to not sing with a classical mindset, because he was taught to pronounce every vowel and consonant fully.

What an interesting observation about the neutral Spanish! MinGyu and well, Forestella are just incredible, adventurous, and musically intelligent and plain old-fashioned hard-working. I really love his voices…because he actually can surprise you.❤

His words seem very clear across all eight languages, only two of which I understand and even at that my French is much weaker than my English. I'm mightily impressed with his multilinguality, especially his French, Italian, and German. Thanks for this presentation of both Marc and Sam's analyses, you two feed off each other's outlooks really well. Very interesting points made all 'round, particularly the changes in emphasis of theater and pop and opera styles.

Your discussions were so interesting and made me think abt lots of things. I think Cho is usually between pop and theatrical expression(a little different from 'musical' acting bcz he was originally trained as an 'opera' singer?) Sometimes I prefer a more relaxed way like Sam said, but I think Cho has his unique style and one thing I appreciate is he tries various ways of singing, tries to change when singing a new type of song. So I'm glad to wait for his next moves.

I think it is important to be authentic and share the feeling of the song but paying attention to how u sing matters. Luckily his french was done really nicely which as a french made me happy ofc cause he tried to make the right R etc. But yeah prononciation is important for example whenever I hear sos d'un terrien en détresse by Dimash, no matter how beautifully and amazingly he sing, his prononciation just put me off. Perhaps not so much to non french speaker but it's hard to not care when it's more gibberish than the actual language..so being able to understand what the singer say is as important than just sounding good ... well anyway I think this artist is really amazing both in the way he share the emotions as well as his diction/prononciation. Mingyu was not confident abt his unique voice in classical music.. classical musical related people said that he has too unique tenor voice. However, Forestella changed his lifeeeeeeeeeee cross-over musics fit him so well
@DrMarcReynolds

Cross over music does seem to fit him VERY well. Though Im not sure I agree with those that said he has too unique of a tenor voice. Not that I don't think it is unique but that I think that implies he couldn't have been successful. I think he could have been if he kept with it but obviously this seems to suit him even better. I love when people make their own path to success even when people try to convince them otherwise. Soo glad he found this path to success!

I think what I didn't like is this really long conversation about pronunciation and body language. That has nothing to do with "vocal analysis" beyond the fact that he obviously doesn't speak most of these languages and I'm pretty sure neither of you would have done a better job at singing in multiple languages you don't speak. :)
@samueljoost320

I can only really comment on the german part and i might be wrong there. The first thing, that came to mind, was phonetic training. It did not sound like he learned the language, but like he learned the sounds. His "e"s all sound the same and that sounds wrong to a native speaker. As german is close to a phonetic language, the differences between "e"s for example are not massive, but still there. That aside, his presentation was "sloppy" as most german or english Pop-Songs seem to be, so basically on point ;)
