Self negativity is something that I personally have struggled with. “It’s a singer thing.” Mostly because of the perfectionism, but also because even when intended to be constructive criticism, sometimes it’s to heavy. Like moments when you honestly felt like you did a great job, and then directly after you get off stage someone has something to say. It makes you question yourself on a very deep level and shutdown. To put someone’s opinions so heavy on your soul can 100% crush the childlike spirit that made you want to do it in the first place.

Be kind to yourself. Perfection isn't real. There will always be critics. Sing for YOU. Perform for YOU. It takes a lot more confidence to perform than it does to criticize.

I worked a lot before singing on a stage. The nerves were kicking in and were awful, I was trying so hard to control my breath and I was so disappointed in myself because it wasn’t what I wanted. The crowd went wild and I was surprised. People called my mom and came up to me telling me the song touched their hearts and asking if I was in school for singing. I’m a worship singer by the way. Much love and blessings to you and thank you for making this video! ❤️

When I was small and decided I wanted to be a singer, I used to ask my mom how I sounded when I sang, and she just used to tell me that I didn’t sound good. She and I didn’t have a good relationship at the time, so I think she just took the opportunity to crush my confidence. Now it’s carried on into my adulthood and I feel like I’m in a box of fear and anxiety around singing. But I have to find a way to shine, because I have something to share with the world.

And honestly it kills my performance. There's always a voice in my head that tells me you're suck you're not gonna do it. I really want to get confident on stage

Here's a tip. Whenever you go to sing a song, make sure you can remember the lyrics IN YOUR SLEEP!! When you go on stage stage jitters effects most people, and the very first thing to go is your MEMORY. So if you totally ingrain the lyrics in your head first, you will be able to concentrate on your performance with full confidence, not until.

The thought of being able to share a piece of who I am with a crowd, and to connect with them on a personal level, is such an overwhelming emotion. If I could live as a touring artist and be met with all the essential items needed to sustain life and $500 a month to do with what I wish, I wouldn’t complain. It’s the connection with the community that I want. 33, living in my car, about to move to Cali again, multiple careers, multiple traumas, music is my only answer.

One of my biggest moments was when I was on the Apollo live at showtime at the Apollo hosted by Steve Harvey. I went on the show and it is a very tough audience very tough. They serve liquor in the isles so by the time you go on people are definitely a little drunk and rowdy. If they don’t like you they do boo you and eventually you get pushed off the stage. Backstage I was confident and giving everybody confidence but when they called my name all of a sudden my mouth dried up like it was a lemon on a desert but I still went out there and did everything I could and I didn’t win but I didn’t get booed either. I was asked back on another show. It was definitely an experience that I look back on and think to myself you can’t get into your own head you got to get out of it. Just put in 100% even if you’re feeling maybe 70% that day go in with the notion of doing your best within the time you have allotted. You’ll come out of it feeling like more accomplished and you’ll beef up for next time.❤❤

YES!! Thank you soooo much for the very down-to-earth lesson. I love your energy, sis. This is a hard topic for me but I have my first solo gig coming and I am determined to CRUSH IT!! I thought I needed help vocally, but my coach said I just need some “artist tuning” so she is helping me to fine tune stage presence. People have always overlooked me and made me feel like my voice was horrible. It wasn’t until recently that I noticed people beginning complimenting me, not because I got better, but because the negative folks were the ones talking the loudest. I couldn’t her the compliments before but now, I do. But, I’ve been beat down so bad, by myself, that it’s difficult to get that mindset change. But, I’m going to do! I didn’t intend to write all of this, but… thanks again ☺️

I like how u touch on more of the mindset that are coach's rarely focus on. But this may kick start but would not fix all Doing inner work. Working on ur self confidence and self esteem. Working on ur bodylanguage. Working on ur vocal. Doing exposure theraphy like singing walking on the road while people are watching Creating a fear hierachy and do that desentisizing urself to stage singing , starting from singing to ur parents or sibling etc to singing to a huge stadium (if we are ballsy enough to make it there). Working on all over singing skills being prepared watching ur favourite singers over and over again. Doing breathing exercise. Meditation. Being present whether off the stage on the stage. Getting knowledge abt human psychology. Daily practice on all over skills so that they become who u r and effortless. This worked and Working for my stage performances in a busy night club.

2nd time on stage tonight, first time was at a local pub a couple of months ago and tonight on a big stage for an national open mic competition. Was talking to other performers who have done this competition and there's going to be hundreds in the audience. Scared shitless. My biggest fear is forgetting my lines x Needed this. What you said about that audience member that said you made their day, that happened to me last time (my first time) and it made me feel like doing this is worth it. Even when most of the audience isn't listening, there always might be one that is and we're making a difference even a small difference.

This is what worked for me. FIRST, if you aren't 100% confident in your abilities, you will never be a confident performer... period. I'm an actor and a singer, so this applies to both. I gained confidence simply by one thing, singing in front of as many people as I could (even in karaoke bars to a bunch of drunks), and on the road with a working band. But by far the MOST important thing, in my opinion, is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! If you don't do this this constantly, you will NEVER achieve your goals, no matter what your field. I love this saying on the subject: "Prior preparation prevents poor performance." Remember it.

You are absolutely correct. I was well in to my sixties and started playing the drums. My boyfriend, who was a songwriter and guitarist decided I was good enough to be the drummer in his band. We rehearsed for months and I got better and better and then I played in public with him. It was quite rewarding and I was way more confident than I ever would have been had I not prepared extensively.

What i do NOW is... i ask my audience questions as well as dedicating certain songs to someone in my audience. or sometimes i go OUT INTO the audience. I will introduce the song first or the artist and give some wikapedia about the song before i start it. This helps me to act more normal like i am having a conversation with them.

I enjoy your podcasts so much PV that I re-visit from time to time. I particularly like what you said here about the MENTAL component of singing, probably the most difficult part of singing and acting to overcome. Sir Lawrence Olivier, perhaps the greatest stage actor of all time, suffered from such stage fright that he had to vomit before every performance. Once he actually got on stage, however, he was always great. I also loved what you said about simply putting a smile on your face! Nobody likes looking at a somber person on stage. They will always respond better to a happy, smiling face, no matter what your skill level.
