1) Wait for good snow in Corbet's. 2) Practice drop-ins followed by a quick turn on steep but open runs/terrain. 3) Do most of the other chutes at JH first. If you can't do the other chutes, don't bother with corbets.

If there's anyone here seriously planning to ski corbet's for the first time, just remember it's mostly 30-35degree slope. Just the run in is steep and that's what scares the most. Try to keep in mind that the couloir is fairly mellow so you can easily get rid of the extra speed if you wish to do so.

I often ski very steep double-black runs that most other 52-year old recreational skiers wouldn’t go near, but one look at Corbett’s from the top and I knew there was no way in hell I was ever going to do that. It’s terrifyingly steep.
@nickv3085

Just the entry - it’s super mellow after that turn and you have a lot of space to dump speed. People freak out and ski the beginning like there is a cliff around the corner.
@humanbeing2420

@@nickv3085 That is what I've been told by other people too. On the day I was there, it was late in the season and there wasn't a lot of snow, and unless there was another way into the run that I missed, it looked like you had to hop off the edge and get airborne for a few feet just to get into the run. That is what made it look so scary - that plus the steepness at the very top.
@nickv3085

@@humanbeing2420 absolutely. The entrance can get really gnarly in bad conditions I’m sure. I think most people aren’t comfortable with small drops / mandatory turns, even if they aren’t “hard”, no one really practices that stuff or progresses on it. There was a small cornice drop into a run called dropout chutes in mammoth, couldn’t have been more than a few feet. Very mellow and fun. People were instead doing this janky side entrance traverse thing to avoid a tiny drop in. Corbett’s is much harder than that, so it’s understandable people are afraid of it. I do think people overestimate it though.

As with any drop, spend more than 30 seconds standing at the edge, as soon as anyone else sees you considering it, you have to do it

I got off of that thing one day and landed flat on my face when both my skiis decided to let go when I landed. Seemd like about a hundred feet of air and I saw stars and yellow fog and my buddies and about 12 other people couldn't stop laughing while they were applauding. You're going to have a lot of speed when you come out of that chute so pay attention

You almost have time to recite the Lord’s Prayer during the initial drop. And if the snow below is packed it feels like a fly being hit by a fly swatted.

Steeper than it looks in the video, plus the initial right turn out of the chute tends to be icier and have exposed rocks at the exit. This guy made the turn look easy and the conditions were powdery.
@Jim-Tuner

Its way steeper than you would think. And most of the time, the snow conditions on the run are terrible. Its all really down to being able to make that first turn on something that is really steep and usually really icy. Its not technically hard. But its really intimidating to the 99%.
@markroderick5160

It all depends on how the snow has piled in. Despite this video, much of the time it’s basically impossible to ski. Jumping the whole thing is a different story, but beyond my pay grade.
