Today is the first of our brand new minisodes - short episodes where we go through two-three key exercises to address real problems we are having with our real horses. Jackie is featured in todays episode with Ben riding and I am helping them work on their downward transitions from canter to trot.
Jackie likes to rush and get tight in her back after the canter so we have used two easy exercises to improve this.
The first exercise to stop your horse from rushing after the canter featured today is going to be to take away speed and momentum from the trot before and after cantering by using big half halts and testing the rhythm (explained in prior episodes and briefly talked about in this video). This will also help the horse to let go of its back as it contracts and expands its muscles and gently stretches and strengthens all those little muscles behind the saddle, improving longitudinal suppleness.
The second exercise is to develop lateral (side to side) suppleness in between the canter transitions by yeilding the horse's ribs when they want to run and get tight and then turning the shoulders to create bend through the body. This teaches the horse than went it wants to get faster in the trot it should instead soften through its body and become more swingy and go forward within the rhythm, instead of just quicker.
Let us know in the comments if you have any questions or suggestions for future episodes that might help you and your horse! We are always happy to help. Please subscribe so you don't miss the next minisode!
