Because of this video, I learned the necessary skills to finally fix the slow moving tub drain. And removed a 3' hair clog. All that hair my husband wouldn't admit that he was losing.

Thank you! I had paid a plumber $75 to look at my slow drain issue and he stopped when he could not fit the end of the auger into the small drain hole at the the bottom of the tub. He did not even know about the overflow. Once I popped off the overflow cover and stuck the auger down about 2-3 feet I was able to pull out the hair clog. This was a great tip! Thank you :-)

Jane -- WONDERFULLY informative!!! Told me and my husband exactly what and how to do this, every step of the way! See, we rented one of those models that sits on the floor, he unclogged the kitchen sink, and we wanted to do the tubs too. So we wouldn't have to rent it over again, or call a plumber. We looked at another video, the guy said NOTHING about what to do. He gave no explanation whatsoever, just did it, didn't even show how he put the snake into the drain hole. Magnificent video!

For best results, bend the snake head about 20 degrees in the direction of the tip. After many tries this idea broke up the blockage. A straight head will only go into the center of the block - if the blockage very tough.

Jane is *"the woman"* - no doubt. Excellent demonstration for making the technique as easy as possible! Just did the same thing to unclog my tub after watching this video. The clog was 10-15 feet into the pipe. The same electrical auger can be rented from Home Depot ($45.00 a day), but is very heavy. I have much longer hair now, so that's why it clogged so badly over time.

So pretty much EVERY time you're advancing the cable, you want it to be locked AND spinning while you push it? I ask because I was using a hand-powered auger, and I fed/pushed the cable down by hand, and then whenever I felt resistance, I locked it and spun it past the sticking point before returning to pushing it down by hand. I did, however, eventually find it nearly impossible to keep going after about 8-12ft, so I don't know if spinning it WHILE pushing it into the drain wouldve facilitated me getting it in further. The hand auger also has a drill bit connection, so I'll probably try that next, depending on what you say :) Thanks so much!

You mention that you put the auger in reverse when extracting the snake. I was taught not to do that or the glob might come off the auger. I was told that you only re erse when the snake is lodged in you can't get it out. Also, going in reverse undoes the winding of the cable and therefore reverse should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Just a couple of questions. I rented one of these and am in the midst of trying to unclog an upstairs bathroom sink drain (1.25" diameter) with it. How can you tell how many feet you have left or are reaching the end of the auger since you can't see inside the drum? And if you unplug the drill auger can you pipe some water down the drain while the auger coil is still in the drain? my issue is that I tried my 25' hand crank auger with the 3/8 coil and couldn't force it past what I'm sure is a 90° turn when it hits the basement floor. I think this 35 ' long 3/8 coil electric auger has made it past there, but I'm still feeding it with no resistance and it's only coated with black water. When I run a small stream of water in to the drain it now takes about 15 seconds to come back up (as opposed to the 6 seconds it took yesterday when attempting with my hand crank auger.). If I run almost the whole contents of the electric auger - or what I estimate to be almost the whole thing- and still meet no resistance and still get back flow in the pipe, then what's left to do but call a plumber? What would they do differently? Sorry for all the questions but I've been dealing with this situation for 5 days now and am starting to lose hope with the sink drain in this 50 year old house.

I’m at the same exact problem today. Bathtub drain is coming up with black/rusty water when turning on bathroom sink. How were you able to resolve this?
@robbrien8506
Жыл бұрын
@@deltasolja716 With alot of patience and persistence. I had to rent the longer auger of 35' since it was clear the first one I used, my own hand crank one of 25', was just not physically long enough. I took a tape measure and walked around the house and estimated/added up all the heights and lengths the upstairs bathroom sink drain would have to travel to reach at least the drain in my basement laundry room- though I didn't add in the little bit of extra distance to access the nearby cleanout, because the cleanout usually requires a big wrench and alot of strength to undo the big bolt and cap- something I didn't think I could do after years of it not being opened, and probably only by a plumbing company, when it was done years ago. I was lucky I didn’t have to access the cleanout, but many people do. Also, the electric auger I rented from Home Depot had various little special biting tips that you could put on the end of the auger to help break up the clog. In the end, after 8 hours of coming back and forth to it and then letting it settle, along with pouring drain decloggers down the sink, and pulling up surpisingly modest sizes of scum and little bits of hair and greasy clogs, it gradually let go, or started to allow the water to drain properly. But it was a slow, steady process. And each time after pulling it up, and then letting it go back down, I would always listen carefully to the sound of the auger as it clattered down the pipes, and reached or hit the bottom floor. After that right angle, I would gingerly push it forward, because obviously that's were the clog was, somewhere inbetween the house and the line outside the house. I'm guessing, in my case, it ran past the cleanout, but was still within the house, as it the pipes run across the basement laundry room floor, which faces the front of the house where the city sewer connections are. Just from the feel and also the physical length of the Home Depot rented auger, I don't think that even it was long enough to exit the house. I suspect if I had been able to open the cleanup, it would've been a whole lot easier, and negated the need to rent an extra long, electric auger, since my own smaller snake/auger certainly reached a bit past the floor judging from my measurements and the sound it made when hitting the floor through the pipes. If you're able to, I would first try the cleanout. You might have to rent a special wrench to open it, or maybe just try with your own wrench, if it's big enough. Hope this helps. Good luck. Even though it was exhausting work, with a little bit of luck, I was able to resolve it on my own, but if I couldn't have, I was ready to call a plumber after 2 days of trying various things.
