yeah over by PA. Skiers use the bunny slops so much they get packed down tight than frozen. Instead of a gentle angle down, they are way steeper than necessary but the hill itself is small. Makes terrible practice.

So jealous of that bunny flat! I'm learning at overcrowded Snowbowl in Flagstaff, AZ. Between the Phoenix desert dwelling crowd that have no equipment and are only there to loiter on the bunny slope to take selfies and the complete lack of ANY flat area....it's been trial by fire 😂

Worked great on about 6"-8" of average snow starts to struggle a bit past 8". kzitem.infoUgkxoHYZbq5g9fkcAtinlTqstNlje-UQkCHN Very light weight and the chute spin control works well. For the low price you get a ton of value. My only complaint is managing the cord as it does take a fair bit of effort to watch and pull the cord out of the way. I found myself having to whip the cord out of the way a lot when I needed to make one way passes to mange the blow direction. It's less of an issue when you can work both directions. A battery powered version would be a lot easier to handle but that is also double the price and requires battery care. I chose the corded version so I didn't have to worry about batteries but I do now see how much work the cord is. I let my neighbor borrow it and it outperformed his smaller gas blower, he was totally sold. Very pleased with the power and operations.My only suggestion is to spend a bit more on a cordless version if you have budget for it. The cord is a bit more of a headache than I thought it would be. Very pleased with the Snow Joe brand and quality.

A few years ago I went on a snowboard camp to learn how to snowboard and the instructors had the exact same methods you have and with the exact same detailed explanations. It's so important to have instructors that can explain the physics behind the movements and not just "turn your shoulder and the board will follow" like I heard some of them do. Awesome video!

Phenomenal video. Really wish i had something like this when I was trying to learn. I swear Elsbeth is better after 6 hours than I am after 2 years. Will definitely be practicing whilst thinking about these techniques. One thing I would add to any reading this comment.... Buy or hire the right gear. I purchased an older, 2nd hand snowboard rather than hire, and I believe it made it far more difficult to learn on(due to camber profile and flex). Other than that, get as much time as you can on the snow, and ENJOY! Thank you so much for the awesome content, keep up the great work.

It is very dependent on the student too, we all aprehend a metaphore in a different way. To make people understand a very precise general body movement which slightly moves your mass center, you gotta start somewhere and it doesnt always produce the same result. I am no professionnal but I learned the basics to a few people. I tried to explain it alternatively with a rotative hip movement that you can "pilot" with your hands on the hips, or with a shoulder movement with both arms extended in the shoulder line, the front arm pointing at the direction you wanna go. If i go "hips and shoulders aligned, bend your knees, move your body weight on your front foot ... no, too much on the front foot ... your but is too far behind, chin up ..." I will have a frutrated student on the ground in no time. You gotta find a description of the general movement that works. The levers metaphor looks great, i wanna try that. I m glad it worked for you. Happy riding !

I've noticed that nobody suggests in their lessons for students to do some minimal body/limb stretching before starting the lesson. I think its crucial and will help from a super sore body so that the students can practice along with more stamina and less muscle aches,cramps and sores.Those things can be discouraging to beginners mentally and physically.

Seriously amazing video. Been riding for quite a while now and even taught some friends but you're giving so much more insight here. When you just "know" what you're doing and try to explain it, you tend to leave out a lot of the technical stuff. But your detailed explaination really helps understanding the physics behind it. Seeing your approach makes me want to teach more :D. Keep up the great work on the channel. Really glad you popped up in my recommended videos :D

My girlfriend just had her first week of snowboarding. Unfortunately group lessons weren't available, so she had to make do with a private lesson at the start of the week, which took her right up to the point of learning how to link turns. I tried to teach her turning throughout the next few days, and then she had another private lesson which was next to useless. The next morning (unfortunately on the last day!) I took her out to practice using your technique. Thirty minutes later, after only two small runs holding her hand, and then she was already off and linking turns by herself!

@@BlueCrystal1996R An update, as requested: Such an amazing first experience! Definitely doing this again asap! I took a short introductory lesson and it really helped to have someone there, correcting me as I went on. I ate A LOT of snow today, but that's just part of the process. It happened mostly on my toe edge, as I didn't lift my heels enough/correctly. Trying to think of Malcolm's explanation about toe edge position, the last few runs went a bit smoother. At first, I found it difficult to initiate the traverse on both edges (the slope wasn't very wide either, didn't really help). It was rather difficult to keep myself centered on the board AND put more weight on my front foot AND keeping my knees bent. But the last few runs went a bit smoother. I also encountered another issue. When I was on my toe edge and trying to think of Malcolm's example, I didn't bend my knees enough while trying to push out my hips. In turn, my shoulders went over the toe edge and it made the board slip out from under me on multiple occasions. I hope to work on this in the near future. Leaning on the front foot is a challenge, especially when you start picking up speed. Something to work on for sure. Malcolm's absolutely amazing analogy of ski poles/levers has helped immensely! It really helped me to initiate turns a bit easier, but I do need to work on the timing. Wrong timing messed a few turns and made me catch an edge on multiple occasions. However I was able to link up a few of them, thanks to the tips I picked up in this gem of a video. A few very, very crude S-shapes were made, I'd call that a small win for my part.

Great beginner guide! My only suggestion would be teaching a bit about falling correctly early on. Natural to want to catch yourself with the wrists like in some of the falls here but very dangerous especially when they get more comfortable with faster speeds and around icier slopes. My instructor did this and I still thank him tremendously for it in my later years of snowboarding.
@drmdrm3703
10 ай бұрын
can you pls explain a bit on how to fall?
@paulg.9052
8 ай бұрын
@@drmdrm3703 Try not to fall on your wrists ever. They are very weak to bump your impact when you fall. It is better to use your foreams so the impact goes directly into your shoulder, which can handle the forces much better. Also when you feel that you lose balance and are about to fall, try to make yourself small (eg. sit down) if possible, so your impact won't be so hard. (works better when you fall upwards). Falling downwards is always a little bit fiddly. Also lower your center of mass and rolling over your shoulder works kinda for me.

When I was first learning to snowboard, I took group lessons. They started us off on the magic carpet. Mr. Moore, you've outdone yourself yet again. Excellent analysis. I'll use this video to help teach a few friends to snowboard this season. I have a theory I'd like your opinion on. I think we could revolutionize snowbaord teaching by eliminating the term switch--by telling beginners there is no such thing as switch and they should ride left foot forward and right foot forward on an equivalent basis from day one. So I submit that beginners should learn on true twins with a cam rock profile, doing everything you say on a 50-50 basis regarding the lead foot for everything from hour one. What do you think?
@malcolmmoore
2 жыл бұрын
Haha yeah I like that idea somewhat, however one of the tasks you do right at the beginning, skating, is quite difficult to do switch, and to unstrap, strap back in, and learn it with your other foot would mean it would then take you longer to get practicing on the slopes. And I guess it would just mean more practice time for everything really. So whilst although I think it's a good idea, when most people are constrained to learning within a short time frame, if one foot forward starts working you just kind of roll with it! But yeah, learning switch as a beginner definitely helps with your overall riding down the line for sure!

@@malcolmmoore You're probably right. I was thinking on my own experience. Looking back it would have been great to have an instructor as talented and technical as yourself to put me in the mindset of everything equal from the jump. But everyone is different. Now I humble myself every session to try and ride switch 50% of the time. I still suck at it. Oh yeah, you and Indy are the best snowboard duo since Rice and Landvik.

Love this video!! I've been snowboarding since the late 90's, I taught myself on a borrowed Burton downhill snowboard at Snow Summit (So California). I just went up without instruction and applied what I knew from skating and surfing and eventually figured it out after a lot of tail bone bruising and cursing. Videos like yours help guys like me to teach because it's hard for me to put my movement into words other than "just do it and figure it out, that's how I did it". This helps because my 13 y/o son wants to learn to snowboard, he's an experienced intermediate level skier, and we'll watch this video a few times together and give it a go this weekend. I had to learn to ski because it's what my kids learned to do and I can't teach them on my board. I got to get them snowboarding so I'm not the only one. I think I'll have my 3.5 y/o daughter just go straight to snowboarding 😎😎

Exactly the same. Today was my first day of snowboarding after 22 years of skiing. All I did was watching this video. Towards the end of the day I started to link the edges. Learning it by myself is thanks to Malcolm!

Everywhere my friends took me, i ended up just learning from the top of a run lol. Took 3 good days of trial and error before i came to videos to learn the basics or anything i wouldve missed.

Thank you so much for making this video. I've just come back from a week's holiday where I taught my 13 year daughter to snowboard on the back of this video. By the end of the week, she was nailing it! Keep up the great work.

Funny thing you start with the frontside. We always start with the backside. Because it's more easy (most of the time). A good frontside turn is the most beautiful in my opinion though.

Great video! I wish I had these tips on my first runs. All my friends were skiers so I just had to translate my skateboarding experience to snowboarding. Which lead to many falls & embarrassing moments before getting the hang of things

i had to do the same and my skateboarding experience is only beginner level 😬 def helped a little bc i kind of knew how i needed to move to control the board but def also fell a LOT

the problem is the exact moment of transition, when the board becomes flat and I usually catch an edge there, before being able to change my edge

This video is so good for a refresh given I am still learning, I got the hang of it, however this video helps me realize what I need to be doing, and things I do not need to be doing, Very helpful and some of the best instruction I found in KZitem! Always enjoy your videos Malcolm!

Wow MM! Lever method - Game changer. This is so much better than the opening door method we're all taught. U got the girls doing both J-turns on one foot outta the blocks! And have them carving S's in 6 hrs! Evidence is there folks... Sick vid!

So I tried snowboarding once on my own and once with an instructor. I struggled more the second day on bunny slope. Hearing the way you explained it all using analogy and showing in living room, it finally clicked what I was doing wrong. Thanks for making this video!! You have what I call the heart of a teacher🤘

I think you're by far the best to explain what to do and how to do it... honestly, i've had two different teachers, only you can explain it THAT good. Maybe I will learn eventually one day, but I wish one day to meet you and have lessons with you or just say a BIG thanks for all these videos :) cheers from Lausanne!

Not really until you get towards carving. For when you are learning to snowboard you are skidding alot, which you can't really do on a skateboard, wel I know you can powerslide but that requires alot of effort whereas a skid on a snowboard is quite easy!
