Three reasons to soil block when starting seeds.
1. Soil blocks foster air pruning which forms healthy root systems
2. There is less transplant shock
3. No cleaning of pots and seed trays
I don’t follow a specific soil block recipe. I have used both Coco Loco and Biovast Living Soil as the main ingredient and had success with both.
I like adding 1/4 cup or so of green sand but I have also made successful soil blocks without it.
Pittmoss is a nice substitute for peat or any other bulking agent. It is made from recycled paper. I do not like using straight coco coir for any seed starting due to its salinity, however coco loco is made from coco coir. The difference is that the coco coir in coco loco is triple washed.
I prefer a Swiftblocker to a Ladbrook soil blocker because of my carpel tunnel and arthritis. Plus the Swiftblocker makes more soil blocks in a shorter amount of time. I’m using the Swiftblocker Mini 27, but there are other models that can make different size blocks in different amounts.
