If you see a liquid detection warning on your iPhone
Your iPhone can alert you if there is liquid in the connector when you connect a Lightning or USB-C cable or accessory to your iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later.
If you see one of these alerts, your iPhone has detected liquid in the Lightning or USB-C connector, or in the cable or accessory. To protect your iPhone and the accessory, charging and accessory connections cannot be made until the connector, cable ends, and accessory are dry.
iPhone liquid detected alerts
There are 4 iPhone liquid detected warnings. We share these warnings below.
Cannot charge: Displayed if liquid is detected when you plug your iPhone with Lightning connector into the charger.
Liquid Detected in USB-C Connector: Displayed if liquid is detected when you connect an accessory or charger to your iPhone with a USB-C to USB-A cable. Unplug the charging cable immediately.
Liquid detected in Lightning Connector: This alert appears if liquid is detected when you connect a Lightning accessory that does not charge your iPhone to your iPhone.
Liquid Detected: This alert appears if liquid is detected when you connect a USB-C accessory to your iPhone.
When you try to charge the phone with a liquid detected warning
If you charge your iPhone while the Lightning or USB-C connector is wet, the pins on the connector or cable may corrode, causing permanent damage or rendering it inoperable. This may cause connection problems with your iPhone or accessory.
Although you shouldn't charge your iPhone when it's wet, you may have to charge it in an emergency. In such a case, if you reconnect your iPhone to its cable or accessory, you can override the liquid detection warning and charge your iPhone.
When you receive this warning, you can use your wireless charger (if available) to charge your device. For best results, make sure the back of your iPhone is dry before placing it on your Qi-certified charger.
If your iPhone or accessory is wet
Disconnect the cable from your iPhone and the other end from the power adapter or accessory.
Do not reconnect the cable until your iPhone and the cable are completely dry.
Let your iPhone dry
Gently tap your iPhone with your hand, with the connector facing down, to remove excess liquid. Leave your iPhone in a dry, drafty place.
Wait at least 30 minutes, then try charging with a Lightning or USB-C cable or connecting an accessory.
If you see the warning again, there is still fluid in the connector or under the pins on your cable. Keep your iPhone in a dry, drafty place for about a day. During this time, you can try charging or connecting an accessory again. It may take up to 24 hours for the device to dry completely.
If your phone is dry but still not charging, unplug the cable from the adapter and unplug the adapter from the wall (if possible) and reconnect it.
A few things you shouldn't do:
Do not dry your iPhone using an external heat source or compressed air.
Do not insert foreign objects such as cotton swabs or paper towels into the connector.
Don't put your iPhone in a bag full of rice. Otherwise, small rice particles may damage your iPhone.
