nothing to do in the parentheses (3) so from left to right sq 6=36 /2x3+4=58

BODMAS - B for BRACKETS take precedence over D Division and M Multiplication. The answer is therefore 10 like this: 36 ÷6 + 4 = 10

Wrong becaue when no multiplication sign the 2 and brackets are considered 1 term. By the way my calculator gives the answer as 10.

Agree. The component 2(3) shall be considered a single term, just like we consider 2A where A = 3. i.e. 36 / [2A] where A = 3.

Hello Tr. I found it 10, not 58. I tried this question with three scientific calculators and they all said "10" but as I tried it with the normal (non scientific) calculator, I got "58", just like you did!

In fact, as I wrote, if you learned math a long time ago, as I did, you would not consider 2(3) to be exactly the same as "2 x 3". You would interpret it as "(2 x 3)". Thus, you would do this "inner operation" first, which is what PEMDAS actually means with its left-most "P". You would divide 6² by 6, not divide it by2 and then multiply the result by 3 which is what this KZitemr instructs with an intentionally ambiguous problem, that allows "implied" multiplication symbols, but not the implied parentheses that most people & your scientific calculators insert. In practice, calculators & computers & Excel do not allow such ambiguity. Not even something like "2X" is allowed. In order to solve for "X", the equation entered into the computer or calculator must have isolated the variable to one side of the equation and generally simplified such things as (2(3)"

I done it with out a calculator, I got 10,then I feed it into a Sharp w535 calculator and got 10,then I fed it into a calculator that I downloaded and I still got 10, so who is rigt?

This is just another of hundreds of Internet math problems tricking people up on "order of operations" & "PEMDAS" But, in fact, it is NOT current convention to write equations that are made ambiguous by leaving out parentheses, when they would clarify what is being asked....or by not resolving some operations in the problem itself. You wouldn't write the "4" in that equation as "1+1+1+1"; and if the intent was to multiply that 2 by 3 before dividing into 6², EVERYONE would simply write a "6" in the prob;em itself. . The problem is that PEMDAS is inadequate, and ambiguous unless you know a bunch of unwritten conventions/ You must know that the "P" also refers to any enclosing symbols, including () parentheses; [] brackets & {} braces (a/k/a "curly brackets")...and actually intends to direct you to do inner vs outer operations first. You need to know you work from left to right, except that PEMDAS itself has you doing some "rightmost" ops before lefthand ones. And, with M&D or A&S, it's whichever op in each of the 2 groups of operations comes first. And, then there is the current convention that "2X" is identical to "2 x X" or "2.X", because current convention allows implied multiplication symbols, but ignores that common (if not official) convention is to also assume or imply parentheses....such that a huge part of the world treats "2X" as "(2 x X)". And, in fact, when writing higher math equations, or in Excel & other programming, equations must be explicit. And, if the equation was simply 6² ÷ 2X, 99% of the world would say the answer is: 36 / (2X) but I presume you will say that PEMDAS directs the answer to be 18X ...which is, frankly, bullshit. In that regard, in using common vs "official" convention, one cannot be blamed for coming up with an answer of "10" for this intentionally ambiguous problem, vs the "58" presume you say is correct.

PEMDAS. If "P" is for "parentheses", then (3) comes first. Thus (3) = 3. Then E for exponent : 6^2 = 36. Then M for multiplication : 2 X 3 = 6. Then D for Adivision : 36 ÷ 6 = 6. Then A doe addition : 6 + 4 = 10. Then "S" for subtraction, But there is no subtraction... So 10 minus nothing = 10, not 58. QED.

@@ausbare140 Well... By "comes first", I meant "It is the first one we must do". If you read my post you will notice it is the first one I did. So we're saying the same thing with different words.
