3 great techniques to teach you how to sound interesting and get people to listen to you more just by using your voice effectively.
Use these voice techniques at work and socially. You only need to make some simple tweaks to your voice to help you sound more interesting and engage people.
First - listen to yourself! This isn’t something you naturally do. We talk, we don’t think about listening to how we sound. So when you talk, have the self-discipline to consciously think about how you’re sounding. Try to pick up the tone - is it monotone? Sounding boring could well be the reason why people aren’t listening to you.
Sounding more interesting normally revolves around whether or not you sound enthusiastic. If you don’t sound enthusiastic when you’re talking, why should the other person be interested or enthused by you? If you don’t look interested in what you’re talking about, don’t expect the other person to be!
Second - don’t be afraid to use your hands more. Use your hands to support and reinforce what you’re saying. Your voice will sound more expressive and more lively with hand movements to support it. Moving your hands helps your voice to modulate more. You won’t sound monotone.
So the first tip is to use your hands more. There’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t worry about them being a distraction. That’s unlikely to happen. You’re better off using them if you want to sound more interesting.
Second tip - Modulate the speed you talk at. Talk generally at a speed that is acceptable. The key tip here is to slow down when you want to emphasise a point.
If you slow down slightly and are more deliberate with your voice for important points, the person or group you’re talking to becomes aware something’s changed. You’re doing something different. They take notice. They become more alert. Do this to emphasise key points and to help you sound interesting when it matters.
How to sound interesting - Quick summary:
1. Listen to yourself
2. Use your hands to help you come across more expressively
3. Slow down for key points
