The closest I ever got to nailing the Invasion tone was when I plugged into a modded Laney AOR at a rehearsal studio in Culver City around '89. Lynch had been rehearsing there with his new band Lynch Mob and Jake E. Lee rehearsed there with Badlands. I'm not sure, but the Laney I played when I jammed with a band that shall go nameless because their gutiarist, a left-handed EVH wannabe, was always two hours late to rehearsal, and the band let me sit in because I memorized all the guitar parts. Anyhow, the Laney sounded absolutely Killer. In those days if you plugged into an un-modded, out of the box AOR they had this horrible bass decibel boost that was concomitant with the gain boost, so you couldn't dial it out. Anyhow, a lot of guys were getting their AORs modded to correct this, and modded AORs sounded awesome. This amp was no exception. I played an old Holdsworth Charvel with a Duncan Distortion through it and it was one of the best tones I ever had to this day. It totally captured the tone on Invasion. Now, I know that Ratt used mostly Jose modded Plexis on Invasion, and maybe an AOR in the mix, but Lynch definitely use an AOR mixed with a Plexis on Under Lock and Key. This AOR just an incredible tone and clarity. I didn't use any effects at all with it.

I am very interested in the lock and key and the invasion tones. Are you saying they didnt use JCM 800s? And which plexi is it? 67?

I could see a Laney producing that tone - especially the older Laney's from that time period. I always wanted one, but went down the boutique modded JCM path - which is a different tone. In fact, I would love to have a vintage Laney now, just to experiment. Great story though.

@@4dmind Back in the 80’s, I believe Warren used Laney Amps (I could be wrong). During that period, a friend had a Laney 50 watt AOR head and a Laney 4-12” cab with Celestions. Pretty close to Warrens tone but not exactly.

Warren specifically that was his *lead* guitar sound. Beau Hill said Warren had bought a bunch of Marshalls while on the Cellar tour. Warren brought them to the Invasion sessions, test driving each one, while in the same room as the cabinet. Because it was so loud, by the end, Warren ears were ringing and couldn't really tell the difference between the amps. Later, Beau plugged Warren into a different Marshall and Warren said that's the one. The funny thing is, this was a Marshall owned by the studio and also the same Marshall used on Cellar. According to Beau, Warren didn't know any better. So they slapped a 57 on it (I assume sm57) and that was the sound. At this point, I have to assume this was his rhythm guitar sound. Full In Bloom has got the entire interview with Beau Hill.

@@briandgr8st I don't know what pick ups that PRS has but they are the stock ones. The speaker is going to be the biggest difference in any cab. There are of course cabinets that are made better but that shouldn’t affect the sound that much. The celestion V30 & the greenback 25w are the industry standard. If you want classic rock tones there is also the celestion black back. Used cabs often sound better because the speaker is worn in. It will sound a bit warmer and less harsh.
