Just did my multisown onions for storage today (Santero - they can keep till the following April). Going to do early cauliflower, broccoli & cabbage tomorrow. I'm up in Cumbria, so tomatoes, peppers aubergines & cucumbers can wait until the end of the month. Might do some peas too, both mangetout & pods.

thank you, that's an interesting way of sowing seeds.I have some coir and wondered how you go about soaking it in water and also how long does the seed tray, stand in the water once sown. Does the water all get absorbed or do you take it out the tray when it's fully wet? Also do you use this method for other seeds or just tomates? many thanks!

I would usually check if it’s absorbed the water within 6 hours and leave for longer if necessary and I pour off what isn’t absorbed and yes I use this method for lots of seeds basically all the smaller ones i.e. peppers, brassicas, aubergines, leeks, spring onions, lettuce. Beans, courgette, squashes etc need to go down deeper so I don’t use that for them.

Where is the heat mat situated. Because of the water being poured in?

The propagator itself creates the heat so no heat mat / there is matting inside but purely to absorb the water 💦

Hi there, I have never used coir before but am considering using it this year due to limited storage space, do you think it gives value for money?

I do as it’s easily stored although be mindful where you buy it as some places charge a lot / I always mix with multipurpose as core itself doesn’t have its own nutrients but it does hold nutrients much better than other things you can use which means you need less feed once they get going. When you start seeds off you don’t need lots of nutrients so it’s perfect and also makes the compost finer which also helps when starting seeds
