Just, WOW. In all my wanderings through piano instruction land I have NEVER encountered even a hint of that insight - using the 2-5-1 sequence as a harmonization sequence to the destination chord. Absolutely brilliant!
@jamesgregoric5786

What I mean is, I never thought of 2-5-1 as anything other than a cadence sequence. Using it in passing *really* increases its usefulness for improv.

Piano Lesson with Warren Warren you said that most of the times 2 is diminished in passing chords, can this also be a minor?
@PianoLessonwithWarren
7 жыл бұрын
Leandro Sardinha 2 is diminished in minor key ONLY, its important you remember that. So when you're doing a 2-5 passing and the destination is minor, the 2 should be diminished. If the designation choir is major, then the 2 should be minor. Now, what I explained above is the standard practice, but remember there's no absolute rule in music. For advance players, your 2 can be what ever you want it to be... major minor diminished or augmented. But it require a deep understanding of what's happening before you start changing stuff.

Really good stuff - I'm an accordion player trying to learn piano - my left hand has a lot to learn - I can play bass notes but not chords well with my left hand. Advancing to two handed chords is still a challenge. You gave an interesting explanation of the ii-V-I and how it can be applied to passing. It will take me a little time to digest (through applied practice), but well done - thanks. Accordion bass is arranged in 4ths (down) and 5ths (up), so I tend to see chord relations somewhat differently - in my head I'm always moving around in accordion bass space - you naturally move keys around on the keyboard (roman numeral) side, so I'll have to so some remapping to fully "get it". Thanks for publishing - great job!

Hi Warren! Beginner here.😊 I noticed you always use numbers referring to keys, in which tutorial do I learn this?😊 I really so blessed by what you do!😊
@PianoLessonwithWarren
6 жыл бұрын
Zilpah Beltran thanks for watching. The number system is actual quite easy. I haven’t done a tutorial on this, but here’s the quick break down: There are 7 notes in the major scale, for example C major is; C D E F G A B. The corresponding numbers would be; 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. So when I say 4 I’m referring to F, when I say 6 I’m referring to A etc. As you practice your major scales for other keys, start thinking about there numerical position in the key. In short time you’ll be able think purely in numbers. Hope this helps 😊👍🏾

Correct me here if I am misunderstand the 2-5-1 passing, but would it be correct to say that it’s the same as using a secondary dominant to the destination chord EXCEPT that you are adding a II chord. I’m thinking that it’s like playing two secondary dominants in succession: the first chord (II) functions as the dominant of the V,; and the second chord (V) functions as the dominant of temporary I.
@PianoLessonwithWarren
3 жыл бұрын
That’s absolutely correct. 2-5-1 is just a 2 before a secondary dominant.
