Heard you talk about the chrome wear, that’s what I always check first, but a key note is Zippo only did chrome plated lighters until 1982. Any Vietnam Zippo that is full brass plated is fake.

Thanks for the great vid. I've been convinced for years that my Zippo was probably fake, as it was too shiny in comparison to many of the pictures you see (including in the book, which I also have), and the engraving very shallow and clean. But in fact it's pretty identical-looking to yours both in wear and detail. I'm now pretty convinced it's a 1969 original, especially as the wear on the lighter is consistent with the wear on the engraving itself. As you say, knowing if it was used in service is the big remaining unknown... Thanks again 🙏

Thanks for advertising the book, wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for you dude! LoL I just bought it as I've always been interested in these iconic of iconic Zippos. I've never bought one online as there are indeed soooooo many fakes out there, more fakes than real items its not worth risking the investment. I'll settle for the book! My brother had a belt buckle his godfather gave him that was from Vietnam when he served in that war. My brother lost it when he went to jail. They gave him back all his stuff but kept his belt buckle! I always remember it because I was there when my cousin gave it to him when he got back from Vietnam in 1977 the family was happy when he got back although I was a young kid and didn't really know to much about that war until year's later what affect it took on everyone. Just like anything your living history and you don't think about it at the moment until year's later your like yeah I remember living through that era? Late 60s 70s 80s 90s 20s

Hello there. Thanks for this video! A friend brought me a zippo back from Vietnam 30 plus years ago. The hinge is broken. So need to sort that. I am sure the lower part of the case is 1968, and the insert is also legit from the period. Not sure about the markings though. Could i send you pics to take a look? I sent it to zippo years ago asking them to repair it, but they sent it back saying someone had already tried to repair it and instead sent me a new insert… Cheers

Great video. I purchased a Nam Zippo, I wish I could share a photo of it here, but I can't. On one side it is nicely engraved Strategic Air Command on a banner, on top of banner it has hand holding two lightning bolts and what looks like a small stock of wheat. It's dated 1964.

Thanks for this very interesting and informative video! I just picked one up in a charity/thrift/antique store in Belgium (of all places) and it totally checks out. Seems 100% legit to me. I'm so thrilled! It was being sold as a regular lighter amongst other worthless lighters and (knockoff) zippo's. They obviously didn't know what it was! It's from Quang Tri 68-69 and it has some very interesting engravings. Is there any way I can mail you some pictures for some of further info? If that's alright. Thanks in advance!

I’d love to go down this route hunting for Vietnam Zippos but I’d be going down a deep dark soggy rabbit hole because as you said, to actually find a legit one would be lucky. However, if i knowingly came across a legit zippo forged as a Vietnamese one I would definitely buy it purely because most of them I’ve seen online look cool! As long as I knew before hand it was a fake.

I have a vietnam zippo. Mine doesn't have company markings or slogans, it just has the guys name engraved. Now this video makes me question its authenticity. I mean it looks and feels like a genuine 67 zippo, the shape is right the hinge is right the stamp is right and even the amount of grime is right to show its been used alot. I mean is it possible that the soldier just had his name engraved and nothing else. The biggest thing is I bought it from a guy who's been on ebay since 2019, sold over 1.1k items 100% positive but I only paid 24. Now in the item name it had a question mark so like he wasn't sure it was from vietnam.

I would prefer a good condition Vietnam era KBAR to a Zippo...the Zippo would be stoopid cool, my uncle was in the USAF in Nam. But they're way too easy to fake, and using a Zippfakeo supposedly from Vietnam ? IDK...It would just "feel" wrong. Something to think about with items that are date coded like this is that they'll often stick to 1 date code. Especially if they made a stamp to use. The currently found Buck 110 and 112 knockoffs and their automatic counterparts all have a 2013 date code. Chances are if somebody takes the time to replicate a zippo stamp instead of having to hand do the date code, they'll likely just use it as long as possible.
