Thank you. I watched this video before looking at a motorhome just a few hours ago. The motorhome was exactly what I wanted, super clean, super low mileage and pretty cheap. Had I not watched this video I wouldn't have climbed onto the roof and walked every square inch. The very last section, front left corner, had a soft spot. Upon further inspection the plywood there was rotting away. I went back inside, lifted the removable section above the drivers and passengers seat and looked way back into the corner; and there it was. Warped and rotted wood above the drivers seat. Inconspicuous enough to the naked eye. After watching the video I had a much better understanding of what to look for..and I found it. I wanted the motorhome badly, but what I found was a deal breaker for me. I've restored old trailers to mint condition in the past, just didn't feel like putting the time and effort into this one. Thanks again.

Wow! What a great video. Every RVer who plans to buy a used RV should see this. I am the host of the Better Business Bureau DVD, "Buying a Recreational Vehicle" (available in many public libraries). We advise on the DVD to be sure to have a used RV inspected by an RV technician before buying it. We stress checking for water damage. But, frankly, our words of advice pale in comparison to what you have shown here. Thanks for taking the time to do this. You have likely saved some RV buyers from blowing a bunch of money on a bad RV.
@thekingsilverado9004

You should stress to people that it is a good idea for the units that do not come with 45 mil rubber roof to install a rubber roof. My shop does this for people. Most of the people have permanent camp sites that do this but it makes a big big diff. Also drip lips over the doors or a leaky window makes a big improvement in keeping water out of your unit... When a unit without a rubber roof hits 5 years old it's time to put a rubber roof on it. Most people buy a bucket of that sloppy schmootz and slop it on the roof then they say there it's good as new they say.. It's like a joke they just lowered the resale value of their unit down to ZERO dollars for a Schmootz top camper as we call em here.

THEKING SILVERADO : Great advice. Whats your thoughts on using "Rhino liner"?. I'am by no means a professional on the subject but, I've thought about using a (white in color) Rhino liner but would thoroughly clean the roof upon purchase and spray the material to prevent any future damage that may occure.

He is spot on!I have repaired dozens of floors in these over the years.-It is a pain in the ass -What most dont realize is the trailers are built inside out-Ive been through several plants in Elkhart IN.over the years and they are basicly all built the same.Interior walls-cupboards-all built first then the exterior walls are screwed in from the outside before the skin is applied-Making it impossible to get to the screws.If your unfamiliar with the construction you will do a ton of damage trying to remove the cupboards-Another big thing to look for is the Refer drain hose-make sure its routed to the outside and the bug screen isnt blocked-In humid conditions these put out alot of moisture. On the roofs, seems the corners are usually the first to fail. By the way--Im a certified RV tech.

+Tom Langley. In your honest opinion, what do you think are the pro's and con's between buying an RV to live in part time vs. building a Tiny House. I can see both sides to both issues and am not real sure which way to go. (Don't know if you are familiar with Tiny Houses.but if you are).
@WastelandSeven

+Geny R. I'm not that familiar with RV's but, one good thing that occurs to me about Tiny Houses is that if you built it, you can probably figure how to fix it. Most people haven't built an RV. so repairing one can be a pain, but, most can do small timber framing with a little help from their friends. Its not rocket science. Another thing you might consider would be to get a good storage shed and mount it to a trailer. I have had a storage shed that has roll aluminum on the roof and I've had it for 9 years and no leaks. If it were a bit larger I'd consider mounting it on a trailer then insulating it. It has electric pre-wired. Don't know if that helps, but, I thought I'd throw it out there.

Oh the memories! I worked in RV repair back in the late 70's, 80's. People would come in because of a loose camper jack.... We would open it up and call them to take a look. There would literally be nothing left of the wooden framing and the ONLY THING... (and I am not kidding)... keeping the side of the camper together was the staples holding the aluminum wrapped around the side and seat panel! The framing....turned to powder. And all the wonderful vinyl clad paneling? No, its not for ease of cleaning, its to keep the rot hidden behind it so it looks good for resale! Thanks for this great video guys! It brought back a lot of memories; deer in the headlight look from customers, musty rotten smells, and unwanted (but expected) black water showers from opening up a unit! Ha! One that comes to mind we opened up the floor of an Aljo trlr and the floor space was used as a fekn GARBAGE CAN at the factory! All their scraps neatly hidden away😂

I think that is good information when you buy anything that has a roof and relies on putty to keep it air/moisture proof. I figure most people, myself included, would not have known how to properly maintain something like that and the people selling surely would not tell you. I think more videos like this are in order to educate people on how to maintain roofs, windows, doors, etc. and how to keep them from getting leaky and mold free. Thanks for this video. I don't even own an RV but this was informative. My daughter happens to work at an RV retail place. I will ask her about all this as they do sell trade ins and used as well as new RV's.

+endwatcher The only thing that concerns me is mold. My dad just gave me a very old pop up he had sitting out back that he never cared for using. It had "some" water damage to the top end of the roof where the lifting handles were loose and water was seeping in. That caused some mold. Otherwise there was no mold anywhere else and it was in very good condition. But then I erect it and there's holes in a canvas so dry rotted you can't get anything to stick to it to patch it and it tears very easily. All this plus you can see the stains in the bed clothes from where water got in while it was sitting, that's possibly more mold. I re caulked the roof really well and fixed that. But I forgot to secure the vent cover on the roof vent where it wouldn't blow off, which it did. It rained here in SC for a historic amount of time and for 2 weeks this camper has been full of holes and just flooded with water. Mold has already appeared everywhere. I'm very allergic to mold, so there's nothing i can do with this thing now. It's JUNK. I would have to rebuild the WHOLE thing and replace EVERYTHING inside. Just goes to show a little leak here and there can turn into disaster quick. And yes i put a tarp over it but the winds were so bad here it blew off anyway.

People think oh no mold , put a mask on and start pulling it apart no big deal , remove all the rotten stuff use kilz paint or any mold paint on any wood thats still solid but stained from contaminated rot and rebuild , this guy made it out to be way worse then it was because he most likely sells them or repairs them , either way if your lazy and underskilled to do the work then yes dont buy but for real men who know how to fix and work this is a great starter and you can point out the condition when you buy it and get it cheep . Im buying a 20 with no roof at all and rebuilding from ground up paid 600 bucks , just the parts alone ore worth more, im exited to make it mine

This video should be required watching to anyone that is thinking of buying a RV or trailer. Most Rv's and trailers use OSB, (oriented strand board), in place of plywood. It only takes a small amount of water to shred it and destroy it. The OSB is chipped wood, held together with a glue, not waterproof. If you have a small leak in a camper, you need to move on it quickly, it will damage a larger area rapidly.

Since water leaks are the bugaboo of rvs, you wonder why the makers don't make one-piece "caps," with molded extensions for the AC and the like that would connect under the cap inside the rv instead of projecting through it, fitting the cap over the top down about a half foot. Like a bathing cap extending down the side of a head several inches.

I have been a RV full timer for 13 years and I know about water problems. A common leak is at the bottom of slide outs where the water runs down the sides, rolling down the bottom side seam and seeping in at the bottom edge. I use Gator/Gorilla tape along the bottom edge (overhang) which acts like a drip rail and prevents the water from rolling underneath. This way you can still move your slide out in or out without interference. I mention this because I had water damage in my slide out and then tried this fix which was cheap and effective. Also the best calking sealant for the roof is Dicor.

Corrugated aluminum,flat roofs,edge seams half an inch above the roof level held on with hundreds of screws and plumbers putty. This made me feel sad. Just a little bit of upkeep was all that was needed and this would have been in outstanding condition. I suspect this was probably bought and used a few times and then parked in the driveway and forgotten about. When I go on road trips I often see a TON of campers where it is obvious this is what has happened. I think they just think they will go on a trip next year... then it is put off another year... then another. And they never think about the upkeep because deep down they know they won't be using it again. Next thing you know it is falling apart right there in the driveway.

Just a thought. If I were the new owner of that rig I would strip it completely down to its bones. Heck the trailer frame & many interior components are still good. I would then rebuild the floor & roof with new materials; then reinstall the components that were salvages. Where I encountered something that I couldn't do myself or for which I did not have the proper tools I would seek out those who do have the skills or tools for the job. In the end I probably would end up with a product that was more solid than the original. I say this because I bought a brand new TT in 2008 while still a complete rookie to the RV world. The TT began having water damage issues within 18 months. This was even with periodic maintenance by a national RV store. I can honestly say I did not know what to look for to understand what was happening to my TT. In 2012 I had half the floor, the nose cap & the rear wall by the bathroom replaced by a RV repairman. By mid-2014, you could fall through a good sized hole in the "repaired" flooring. I got tired of the BS from all these RV insiders & took matters into my own hands. I tore out the "new" bad spot in the flooring and replaced it with thicker plywood boarding I got from Lowe's. Next I'll replace the floor tile. The repair may not be as pretty as the so called professional but it will last me a lot longer! I figure when the TT shows more significant damage, I'll do exactly what I suggested in the first paragraph & rebuild the thing the way it should have been built in the first place! My final advice, if you want a TT, watch the available KZitem videos on the DYI TTs. Then either DYI or hire someone you trust to build one for you using the existing frame of a TT such as the one in Uncle Bob's video. Your DYI version will last 10 time longer than the commercial junk that's being produced today!

Last year we were on the market and we were looking for a pre-owned travel trailer and we looked at 3 or 4 units that I found to be suspect to say the least, then I got frustrated and went all out and purchased a new one.

Some people aren't sensitive to black mold. There was a couple living in a house filled with it. She had some serious issues (as in a few visits to the ER type issues), but he did not. They slept in the same room.

Yes butttttt.....mold is everywhere in the air, and the mold seen here was black but may not have been the type of black mold that most people think of. The only way to know if it is the deadly type of black mold is to have it tested. Most often, it is not but all it takes is one bad black spore to start the battle.

Great video, thanks for sharing, what a shame the camper builders didn’t perfect a method where the roof especially wasn’t folded over the sides. I had a cargo trailer built that was 7’ wide. They usually put a galvalume roof on them which is thin, crimped metal that will eventually fail. So I had them take a solid piece for 8’ trailers, cut it down and fold the roof over the sides. I also skipped the roof vent, another leak waiting to happen. Trailer is still dry over 10 years later.

However, new will be the only way to go and, hopefully, with a good warranty! Also, thank you to the BBB "RV Travel" person who suggested we all look into getting a professional inspection - prior to buying - by an RV Technician.

I laughed at this too. I assumed it was because lack of airflow in the cabinets along with the sun probably beating down on that side of the aluminum siding. If it was fermenting that bad and causing that much heat, opening that sucker up would have stunk so strongly it would have knocked both of them on their asses.

Thank you so much for this video! I think you just saved me from making a HUGE mistake! I put money down on a NEW class C RV. I noticed in the cab area a small part of the white ceiling had come apart from the roof. I thought, no big deal, it can be fixed. Now, I am thinking it is doing this because water got into that section and caused it. Is this a good assumption? I looked at the molding on the top of the cab. It looks "scuffed" for lack of a better word. We have not signed the final paperwork, so I can get out of the deal. Also, the RV is in the showroom as a demo model. Did they do this to prevent further water damage? Could there be mold in the section? Should I run away? LOL

It's disappointing that people knowingly pass along thousands of dollars of rip off to someone clearly naive and trusting. It makes me think back to when I was a brand-new adult and would keep getting into these problems because I was raised to be quiet and not cause problems for other people. Sometimes I would notice that a person was lying to me, but I was afraid to call them out so as not to cause them distress. It just sucks. But by the time you make it out of your early 20's you should be past that and hopefully not turn into the same asshole. I prefer private advertisers who openly list problems and adjust prices accordingly. Still, be aware, but those types tend to be honest.

Gerald, you can remove the insert molding carefully and we "as professionals" do on a regular basis when checking units in. When we made this video the main thing we wanted to show was exactly what we were describing. This unit was already 10' in the grave so putting it back together was not going to happen. If we made this video and only talked about it and not shown people what they are looking for it would not of been such an impact. Disclaimer: we do not do this abrupt performance on customers units. Happy Trails!

@@kathrynwallace9495 I suggest that you read his reply S.....L....O....W....L....Y..... You can indeed remove the area on the outside that's covering the nuts without ripping them off as he did. Powderkings, This video was 100% real. The customers that previously owned this unit bought it only weeks before bringing it in to our Service Dept. because they noticed water in a cabinet up front and wanted us to see about fixing it. Once we looked over it with customers on site we told them the bad news of what they bought. They were newbies in the Rv industry and had no idea of what to look for and just wanted to go camping with the Grand-kids. We did purchase this unit from them for $1000.00 and stripped it down for parts after the video was made. Ivon, the owner talking in the video was fed up with what was happening to customers and told our IT Dept to grab the camera and start filming. We knew we were not going to get rich on this deal but wanted to inform other current and future buyers in the RV market what to look for. What has made us warm and fuzzy is the fact that not only have we helped numerous customers, but we have also had other RV Dealers ask us for permission to use our video at their Dealership. We are a truly Family Owned and Operated Dealership and are here for customers in the long run, not just as a ticket number. Yes it is hard to believe but there are a few of us in this world. Happy Trails!

Fiberglass the soft spots and put new carpet over the fiberglass. Take the ladder off the side of the camper so no one can get up on the roof. Use a good air freshener. Use a big fan to air it out just before the buyer shows up. Paint the screws white on the corners. Turn on the stereo for ambiance. Bake a loaf of bread also. Use foam Great Stuff under the rubber roof and make sure it is hard and dry so the roof feels solid. Scrape off the caulking and put new on so it looks good. Good things to look for when buying. lol.

I have been in the RV business for 25 years as a Certified tech I have seen the dealers that I have worked for. do a lot of shady work If you are about to spend your extra money on a Rv before you buy. find a RV Certified Teck and take them with you I can spot problems where the buyer would never see for 100.00 bucks could save you a head ach ,or getting a lemon. Water is the worst thing for a RV If your in the market for a used RV here are 2 tips I as a tech I can give you If it smells musty walk away or the side is delamb because black mold gets behind the wall and you will never see it but a good tech will see it Second Ask the dealer if you can contact the previse owner to see why they traded it in if they wont Walk away because there probably some thing there hiding

On my first and second RV trailer and an RV I owned , all three leaked from the roof fridge vent, not the top cap but the 4 corners of the base were all open 1/8 inch and continually drained water into the fridge area.... a small leak left leaking does major damage....
