Here's one that I just did. Don't stain things directly over your coffee. The oils may look like abstract art and a masterpiece but now you need to clean your cup and waste your tasty cup of hot coffee. 😥

@@MOAB-UT I was going to 400 grit but not anymore. I just refinished my countertop. I think the highest I used was 220. Did the trick! I've used coffee and tea to stain. But only when I was going for a distressed look, so there was paint and coffee stain, intermittently. It worked well. Good luck!

I kind of disagree, and what I mean is you don’t need to always go through the same process of wiping off the stain on some stains, especially if you’re brushing it or spraying it. Although some stains may require it. It just depends on your preference.

You didn’t mention that on this video, everything you mentioned, I’m already doing, EXCEPT for, I’ve sanded this table I’m refinishing with 120 grit, then I went to 220, then 320, then 400! Then between coats I was using 1000!!! And you’re right on the $$, the stain worked, but it had a hard time soaking through! Thanks man, I've been standing my guitar for the past week lol I keep messing up and I'll start over and one thing I didn't think about was the sandpaper because I have a spot where I dug too deep so I figure I would polish it out with some 200 grit sandpaper but the only thing that happened was now in that one spot the stain will not take so I got a beautiful black stained guitar with one spot right below the sound hole that looks different. After the fourth time of redoing it I just said hell with it and sand in my neck here and there to make it look vintage cuz to be honest with you I'm not saying this guitar again I don't know that I have much wood left to sand lol but I will know what I'm doing next time

I've not used it. I've heard both good and bad but the shop that is going to finish the clear on the job I'm working on now likes to use it. They say it allows more control over the color. I can stain it myself and maybe save some money but I don't think I want to try to fool with any conditioner.
@DoingitWithjason
5 жыл бұрын
Totally! Some people really love it...to me it fills up the pores of the wood and barely let's any stain stay on...if I really need to control the color, I generally stain a lighter than needed color and then tint my clear coat to deepen to the desired color...you get unbelievable even tones.. basically perfect.

@@DoingitWithjason I like that idea. I was told that the horrific mess i made using a really dark stain on maple, could have been avoided if I'd conditioned the wood. but it was too late and i've never tried it. Finally got an even finish after a dozen coats or so.

@DoingitWithjason

You can reapply the stain and it should reactivate the first coat of stain and help you to wipe off some of the extra. As long as it's not water-based. You can also try a little bit of lacquer thinner or acetone on a rag and carefully wipe back some of the excess
@pablo46s

I have some leftover stain with a little linseed oil mixed into it. For the moment, I just kept the leftover in a plastic container with a lid on top (the contain I used to mix and apply with). Is this ok? Not sure what other container to keep this leftover in, as I don't want to pour it back into my original stain can without contaminating it. And I don't have any extra tin can to use.

Thanks. Many say to stop at 150 so it can soak in better which makes sense. After stain and before shellac 220. I'll stick to coffee as the stain. Was going to buy DYE but the can says it causes cancer. I like the look but I prioritize staying healthy. I'm sure it will look good enough.
