Great video. I’m 22yrs cutting now, 3 shops later and now doing some part time lecturing, I’m going to show my students this video because nothing is truer than what you said about that 1st day In a barbers, a day no one forgets.

That's awesome Walter, where are you in the world. I dont think it's normal to not have some level of dread on the first day cutting as a professional. Isn't it such a great journey though? Our timeline seems similar. I'm now into my 19th year and also on my third shop.

@@theoneminutebarber my shop is in Renfrew, I had 2 others in Glasgow but down to the 1 shop now, I teach in Motherwell, my 1st haircut in a shop was a wee 2 yr old sitting on his dads knee which made it even more difficult, it’s stamped into my memory never to be forgotten

I am grateful that I came across your channel and this video specifically. I'm currently in college getting my degree to become a counselor, but I have slowly came across the art of cutting hair and have slowly grew a passion for it. Next year when I graduate I want to go into barber school to see if I can cut hair on the side to then make it my full time thing. As a barber for many years do you think it is a safe choice to become a barber and have time to spend time with the people you love? Because I want to have a family one day and want to be able to provide in this economy. Again, the money is not the main objective, I genuinely enjoy cutting hair with friends and family, but I want to also provide. I want to know your perspective on this matter. Great content and God bless!

I think it’s a great choice if you want to spend time with friends and family because the hours are good. Most barbers don’t work past 6pm and don’t start until 9am. The pay really depends on your situation in the industry. The lowest pay is always working for someone else. But booth rent can be a more lucrative option.

Hi Michael, I just used one of your quarantine self-haircut vids to cut my own hair for the first time and it turned out great! Although the occipital blend is a bitttt iffy and I actually couldn’t muster up the guts to shorten the top (but better a large top:side ratio than a small one I guess). I just had a quick question. Would you say the stages of a self-haircut could be divided up into the following? (Assuming classic “long on top, short on sides” cut) 1. Parietal bone against the grain 2. Occipital bone against the grain 3. Top of the head, with the grain 4. Parietal “curve” WITH the grain (blend) 5. Occipital “curve” with the grain (blend) 6. Fringe Thanks so much for any help you can provide! I’m just super lazy and don’t want to have to make an appointment at the barber the rest of my life hahaha. Cheers from the US!

Blue wave that method is pretty much the haircut in a nutshell. Remember it's not perfect, but should produce something reasonable.

Hello Mr. Michael, i don’t know why my hands shaking so much when I’m cutting, did you or your students experience the same thing when you started cutting hair, I’m struggling with this problem and make me wanna give up because i feel embarrassing tbh, i hope this’s just a lack of confident thing and have nothing to do with my body or physical health because I’m only 25 and live a very healthy life style, hope i can get some advice from a master like you, thank you very much sir .

Yes KY go the exact same thing happens to many beginners. It's totally normal and only time and practice will resolve this. It can sometimes happen when you grip the tools to tight. You can even get tension in your forearms, I'd recommend you step away from the hair and take a seat at home away from everyone. Then hold the tools, move them around trying to be as relaxed as possible. Hold them with a very light grip. You'll soon see that it's just a case of relaxing. This is coming from someone who was convinced he'd never make it as a barber, I can tell you that you will definitely make it, even more so that you take the time to learn and ask questions.

You can definitely do it at 37. 100% put all your energy into learning everything you can from as many sources as possible. If you don't like your current job and want to be a barber then you owe it to yourself to make it happen.

Hey Michael I’ve thinking about Barbering for a while. I’ve been working at one of the local government run liquor stores for about 6 months stocking and such. Now that my strength is pretty much shot at least for now. I’ve been thinking about getting a different a job that’s not super physical. At my current job I need to be able to lift/move 50lbs I’ve tried a couple times both couldn’t budge it. I’m in physical therapy working on getting stronger. But that is just the background. I’ve got at least one relative who has there own shop on just about the other side of the country USA. Should I study with them or do a little school first? I just thought since it was family they might be a little more willing and forgiving than other places. I’ve given studying aboard some thought as well if I can afford the ticket and other expenses. Sorry for the long message.

Tony sorry to hear about the physical impact you've endured, barbering is a lot less physical although expect to be standing all day which is its own kind of exhausting. I think you should definitely do some barber school first. Understanding theory will be massively beneficial when you get to the practical side. I'm talking the structure of the skin and hair, what happens to hair under heat, cold, chemical etc.... If you get that knowledge you'll be in a better position going into a barber shop. If you can train with your family too I think that is the best way. You've got a potential opportunity there.

I didn't make it a career but have been cutting my hair for decades. Here's what I did. I had a string of girlfriends who were either in Cosmo school or recently out and in a salon. They cut my hair and I paid attention. I started on my own hair and soon had all the friends in college asking me to cut their hair. I charged a 12 pack or several joints and had a dozen haircuts a month easy. After graduating I invested in a good pair of scissors and clippers from a local beauty supply store. Proper tools make all the difference. The only bad haircuts I've given myself were back in the 80's when a more artistic job was called for and I usually did it after coming home from a club drunk. Biggest tips......always cut less, you can always cut more later but not the other way around and.....don't do it while drinking.

Bob that's a brilliant story. Speaking of alcohol, my first shop was previously owned by a guy who spent the day purging his body with rum. Apparently the haircuts were questionable but people went nonetheless as the he was great craic.
