Define guerilla gardening
Guerrilla gardening is an audacious horticultural endeavor that involves cultivating edible plants and ornamental flowers in abandoned or underutilized public or private areas. The practice aims to transform neglected spaces into vibrant oases, fostering environmental stewardship and community engagement. Guerrilla gardeners, driven by their passion for sustainable urban agriculture, sow seeds of change by stealthily nurturing greenery in parks, streets, and other overlooked corners of the city. By ingeniously repurposing these forgotten landscapes, they not only beautify the urban fabric but also nourish the community’s body and soul with bountiful harvests of fresh produce. 🌱🌻🍅
This is a super small scale attempt at it to see if it would survive and thrive without my input.
How to get started guerilla gardening?
The first thing that is needed is a suitable site.
1. To get started you need to a minimum 4-6 hours sunlight for leafy greens and even more for fruiting plants.
2. You will need easy access to the site so it's not forgotten and gets used.
3. You will need also need easy access to water so that maintenance is possible.
4. If you are entering warmer months consider minimizing the impact of the midday sun or even mid afternoon sun.
Once your location has been sorted you will need:
1. Seedlings (they require less care and maintenance)
2. Compost (to improve water retention in soil and slowly feed crops as it breaks down)
3. Mulch (a lightweight mulch will break down and lock in moisture, reducing water stress).
You should also seek permission to garden the site too. This site was returned to normal at the completion of the timeframe. Different jurisdictions have different regulations on this practice.
