I wonder if an artist can set up a Record Label as an NGO / Non-profit organization. Not to make profit with their music, but use all incoming money to fund new projects / albums. As an NGO you'd also be able to qualify for some cultural subsidies, funding, sponsoring etc. and it would have some tax benefits. (I'm from Europe, I don't know what the rules or opportunities are in the USA). I know some (professional) bands form a "non-profit foundation" and the goal of that foundation is to (help) finance the creative expression, vision and progress of the artist/band. For a songwriter/producer, this non-profit record label construction would allow developing a few different bands/brands under one roof. (Artist development.) Any thoughts on this? (Does your site/book cover the possibilities of this construction?)

bring vinyl records whenever I travel and ask them if I can trade my records for a store credit and I pick out some thing that day. Some of my records are from cassette tapes that I would go to the copy shop and make the covers and make the tapes on my two cassette stereo thing and I sent them out by mail and got some nice replies from famous DIY people. I didn’t have any money back then I was in college and now I met the vinyl because I owe it to my younger self and so do you, don’t let any release sit on the closet shelf till your last days and now days that means don’t let any digital thing not see the light of day

I truly love experts whose principle message is "I really respect the idea that you want to start a business with no money," and then spend the rest of the time explaining why not only is it not possible, but it's also an incredibly stupid plan. Yet he still respects it, he says over and over. Call me crazy, but I don't really think that approach qualifies as the basis for giving sound advice. It could just be me, but I want experts who claim to be giving good advice to actually be willing to call something they think is stupid, "stupid."

I started my label with a 300 dollar Laptop and a 100 dollar mic. The fact is, unless you get a loan, you are going to have to come out of pocket up front. Alternatively, there is merit in knowing studio owners. You can get really close to them, use their studio, and bring them in on it. Or, you could simply ask for discounted prices based on a recording exclusivity contract. By using someone elses studio, the up front costs are minimal, but more expensive in the long run, so keep that in mind (unless you were able to partner with them of course). A better title for this video would of been "How to start a label with very little money". Either way, great video, and informative for those willing to listen. People get stuck on buying the most expensive & popular equipment. But its really all about the knowledge you have. I made enough money to upgrade all my equipment in a littles less than a year, and it was all made by selling DIY Digital Download cards. So yes, Digital releases are key. Also, with my face to face method of selling to random people in the street, I have found that digital is the most viable. Went to the MSU campus to attempt to sell CDs a few times, most people simply dont own anything to play them. However Digital can be played most anywhere. Back to my previous statement about knowledge, I now have enough mixing skill and finesse that I can make the vocals I receive from my cheap 99 dollar USB mic comparable to that of a 500 dollar XLR microphone. Its really about what you know & being smart with every move you are making. To sum it all up, you are not going to able to start a label without some kind of capital. Its just not possible. You have to have a place to record among many other things. It is very possible to start one with very little money however. The more you know, the less you spend! Cheers!
